A rough guide to fine care home wallcoverings

Annette Taylor-Anderson of wallcovering outfit ATADesigns and Gareth Wyn Jones of wallpaper printing firm Switchscene explain the sophisticated process of implementing cutting-edge care home designs from start to finish

Creating wallcovering and mural designs for care homes can be quite challenging and yet rewarding at the same time. It is challenging because before you even start thinking about designing there are several things you will need to consider depending on the care home environment, especially if there are residents who have dementia. There are different colours, tones,

shades and contrasts that play a large part in decision-making, as colours trigger different moods and can further address various needs for a person with dementia. Yet it is also rewarding when the client,

staff and residents are pleased with a finished wallcovering or mural design. To see the smiles on their faces and positive feedback makes all the difference, it is highly satisfying. I have been designing wallcoverings murals and fabrics for the hospitality,

commercial and residential market for nearly 15 years. Creating wallcoverings and mural designs for care homes has brought invaluable skills into the business, especially when creating dementia- friendly designs.

Joining forces In 2019, I teamed-up with Gareth Wyn Jones, an expert in wallpaper printing and founder of Switchscene, to collaborate on care home projects. We both know of, or have, relatives in care homes so this is very close to our hearts. With Switchscene on board, we offer

care homes repeat wallcovering and mural designs printed on specialist commercial-grade wallcoverings for the healthcare market. We provide a bespoke design service, working closely with clients to create designs for their projects. With an ageing population living

longer, care homes are in demand more than ever. Creating a safe and caring environment is crucial, and this includes care home interiors. With this in mind, we like residents to feel right at home with our wallcovering and mural designs. In 2019, Gareth and I completed the

‘Intersection of Dementia + Design’, an accredited two-day course at the University of Sterling in Scotland. The course, run by the university’s Dementia Services Development Centre, covered all aspects of care home design - from new build, interior design, lighting, outdoor space and gardens. We also learnt about regulations, guidance and so on. The course has given me the tools

to move forward in my thinking and understand what is required when designing wallcoverings and murals for care homes, including a dementia- friendly environment.
