DEMENTIA ACCREDITATION

enjoys reading, sewing, or listening to music will require good lighting, manageable noise levels, and quiet alternative spaces which all contribute to comfort. Simple measures such as soft furnishings to reduce background noise or offering quieter areas for relaxation can help create a more personalised and supportive environment.

Self-certification All the information about these six design fundamentals can be found in the free Tier 1 resources, which include a user guide, checklist, best practice examples and case studies. The brief checklist contains questions to help the applicant make simple changes. Self-certification can be applied for when buildings meet three or more of the fundamentals. The building or environment will then be listed in the DSDC register of self-certified environments for ageing and dementia design. Applicants will receive a printed certificate and window sticker to celebrate and promote their efforts and a digital logo for use on their website

and marketing materials.

Supporting those living with dementia EADDAT was created to enable professionals to design an environment to support ageing and people living with dementia. Each toolkit element is designed to improve specific outcomes for both residents and staff. Design and care should be symbiotic. One cannot survive without the other. Incorporating design essentials such as improved acoustics and appropriate lighting levels enhances residents’ comfort and reduces confusion, thus facilitating better rest and activity engagement. For staff, these changes simplify monitoring duties and enrich interactions with residents, leading to more effective caregiving.
