Digital technology


The lightweight, waterproof pager can activate Staff Attack and Assistance alarm calls with an accurate location that is immediately sent to other care staff. Calls from existing nurse call systems


and/or Bluebell fixed call points can also be integrated to ensure staff receive all critical messages and alarms straight to their Bluebell pagers. It provides ripcord alarms, red button, ‘person-down’ alarms and assistance alarms for differing situations. In addition, the pager will ‘follow me’


when the attack event moves location by sending further warnings with the updated location. The alarm calls can also be escalated if a response appears to be delayed. An assistance alarm is provided for less critical situations or to summon help to avoid escalation of a situation. The most secure and accurate location


is provided by dual technology location beacons. They use both wireless and infra-red signals to provide a specific location, even when the infrared line of sight is interrupted. However, wireless- only beacons and NFC (near-field communication) tags can also be used to provide lower cost solutions. The BlueBell


system allows rapid communication of emergencies without intrusion.


Limitations of technology No technology can do everything and it relies upon human skills to work correctly. As with all technology, not all risks can be eliminated. For example, staff alarms will only reflect the staff member’s judgment using the system as to what constitutes an alarm situation. While this can be defined by the care


setting, there are also some limitations on technologies that prevent an alarm. Equally, electronic care plans remain only as accurate as the inputted data. While technology can clearly improve safety to a huge extent, it will never take away from the need for care from real people. Therefore, it is vital that to ensure maximum safety measures are in place, and technology is implemented alongside excellent staff training with a strong emphasis on staff mentality and how they approach their roles. Get the combination just right and risks will be kept to an absolute minimum for residents, carers, managers and owners alike.
