Refurbishment with a Signature touch
Last year, luxury provider Signature Care Homes unveiled an extensive £7.5m refurbishment programme across several of its mature homes. Signature invited former The Care Home Environment editorMatt Seex to visit Signature at Banstead and sit down for a chat with CEO Rob Martin about the programme and the provider’s future plans
Over the course of an illustrious 25 year career in social care, Rob Martin has risen from the post of registered manager – tasked with turning around a failing service – to director level, most recently spending 12 years – first as director of care quality, then managing director – with not-for-profit provider Anchor. His November 2025 move to Signature Care Homes – a luxury provider known for one of the country’s most expensive care home builds with Signature at Highgate – arguably marks something of a pivot, and I was keen to learn more about Rob’s decision.
The Care Home Environment:What spurred your move from Anchor to Signature last year? Rob Martin: “Good question. My time with Anchor was very fulfilling, very satisfying. I had offers to go and work in other organisations, but Signature was
the first thing that felt like a really good fit and the next stage in my career. I was really keen to go somewhere that didn’t set limits or boundaries, where you can do the exciting, innovative stuff without restraint. The luxury care space offers a greater opportunity to be able to do that because you’re not constrained by social care funding. “I got excited straightaway because I know
I can add value here ... I had the leadership team together [recently] and we talked about what really matters, what the future might look like, and that has helped shape a really clear vision for the future. “What has surpassed my expectation is
the quality and talent of the people, both in the leadership team but throughout this organisation ... We’ve got this rich balance of people, but they’ve all got really strong value alignment. They’re really competent and
capable and knowledgeable, and it’s been really great to be able to unlock some of that talent and use that to help shape our vision. “I think the luxury activity that we
undertake gives us the opportunity to set the tone for the whole of the social care space. I find that exciting – whether it’s the technology, or the service standards that we provide, the built environment, the approach to how we staff up these services, or how we meet and exceed customer needs.”
TCHE:With three new care homes on the horizon – in Surbiton, Hornchurch, and Enfield – does Signature intend to continue focusing on the south east? RM: “One of the things that I’ve acknowledged from day one is that we know our strengths. We know what we do well, and what we do well is provide a service
