A home, not an institution Boutique’s mission at Chartwell House – and indeed its other homes, too – is to provide personalised care that recognises each resident as an individual, rather than simply engaging in a box ticking exercise when it comes to staff ratios, infection control, and safety.


“We are generous with our staffing


ratios,” Andrew points out. “Before anyone is admitted, we do a comprehensive pre- admission assessment and that calculates how much time that person needs from the team. But invariably, people will always want to know the ratio, and we work to 1:4 for the Nostalgia Floor and 1:5 for residential. This is generous, and equates to about four and a half hours per resident, per day.” What part did infection control play in the design and build of Chartwell House? “Prevention of infection is more important [than design considerations], because once you have COVID inside a home it’s much harder to get rid of it,” says Andrew. “The


biggest thing for any new building is that every room is en suite, so you’re not sharing anything with anyone else. We have a regime where surfaces that are touched frequently are wiped on a regular basis. We have much more up-to-date sluices than you would have in an older building. We have a super-duper laundry room that can kill anything living! Everything is in-house so we’re not bringing anything in.” Resident safety is always a prime concern for any provider, and I asked the Boutique
