Inpatient Accommodation
‘It is important we continue to talk with each other and transfer knowledge. The Better Bedroom 2 is looking to promote innovation. Innovation within residential care facilities can be broken into three key areas – Configuration, Components, and Management’
our design brief. Working with the door manufacturer, Datim, we managed to find the door mechanism from Royde and Tucker, and specialist sliding door ironmongery from Primera Life.”
CREATING A ‘BEAUTIFUL CEILING’ Matthew Balaam said the team had ‘tried to create a beautiful ceiling’ at the event, but fire regulations had ‘hindered the installation process’. He said: “Among the ceiling’s required features were a ventilation grille, a frame sealed with anti-pick mastic, and a removable grille for ease of cleaning and maintenance.” Static Systems Group has supplied an addressable flush smoke sensor for the BB2. Fully compliant, and using the same principles as optical detectors, a virtual chamber is created below the ceiling to detect smoke. Steel cased, the sensor is vandal-resistant, with ‘zero ligature points’.
The Better Bedroom 2 had a regular stream of visitors during the exhibition at May’s Design in Mental Health 2015 event.
Thorlux supplied the light fittings – a combination of ‘spotlights’ and surface-mounted luminaires. The lights offer a colour temperature effect – changing colour to match time of day. They are ’synced’ with the Cowall to give service-users control, while prescribed settings can be staff-controlled to help patient wellbeing.
COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT
Matthew Balaam said he hoped that ‘the same collaborative spirit shown over the past year will continue to thrive as the Better Bedroom 2 is showcased at various events during 2015’. He said: “It is important we continue to talk with each other and transfer knowledge. The Better Bedroom 2 is looking to promote
innovation. Innovation within residential care facilities can be broken into three key areas – Configuration, Components, and Management – and it is important that we promote and challenge all three.
“I am hoping this presentation, and the bedroom showcased here in Solihull, will encourage others to get involved both with the Design in Mental Health Network and the P21+ repeatable room initiative. Thank you to all the suppliers who have been involved in the Better Bedroom 2 initiative – a learning experience for us all. I look forward to presenting even more innovation at The Mental Health and Dementia Facilities Forum in September and Healthcare Estates 2015 in October.”
