have their own fob key to access their room. The Safesee door also allows discrete, silent observation, and instant access safely during a barricade situation, and features an anti-finger trap, an anti- ligature hinge, and programmable ligature detection. “For the interior design and paint colours, I worked closely with Ginni Duncan-Bilham from Sussex Partnership. The design of the bedroom started with the curtain fabrics. Dulux then set to work to colour match the two primary colours with the fabric, which created the main colour and feature wall colour. Dulux proposed its Dulux Trade Sterishield Matt paint finish; it has the same ‘inherent robustness’ as the company’s Diamond Matt Emulsion, but ‘actively inhibits bacteria growth within 12 hours of contamination’.” The paint manufacturer says the Matt finish ‘creates a homely environment, but will withstand repeated cleaning cycles and maintain anti- bacterial effectiveness’.
CARPET VS VINYL BATTLE BEING RESOLVED
A darker version of the teal colour was then used for the room’s carpet. Matthew Balaam remarked: “I believe the battle between carpet and vinyl is finally being resolved. Tarkett promoted its Tandus Powerbond Medfloor range, in which (the company says) ‘cushion and nylon are fused together through heat and pressure, creating a floorcovering that is integral and inseparable’.” The flooring is reportedly ‘completely water impervious, with an anti- ligature performance and a simple cleaning regime’. “The beautifully upholstered Roku Chair, meanwhile, was supplied by Teal LifeCare,” Matthew Balaam explained. “Roku is ‘ergonomically designed for comfort, but capable of withstanding abuse within a high secure environment’. It has been upholstered ‘to tie in’ with the homely environment.” DiscreteHeat says its ThermaSkirt skirting radiator system ‘creates a safe and hygienic

alternative to low surface temperature radiators and underfloor heating’. “Incorporating the system freed up space around the window for a window seat – creating more valuable space in the bedroom, a greater connection with outside, and a second seat for an impromptu chat, chance to think, read, or reflect,” said Matthew Balaam.
CONNECTION WITH NATURE AND FRESH AIR
“Linked with the Britplas Safevent window, this creates the perfect environment to connect with nature and fresh air, but within a safe, secure, anti-ligature setting.” Pineapple Furniture produced the Sovie Bed after listening to Matthew Balaam’s Healthcare Estates 2014 presentation. The bed can be quickly and easily fixed in two different positions to give service- users an element of control over their environment. Pineapple says: “Fabricated from Kydex, it provides a waterproof, durable design, with cleaning properties not usually associated with a box-bed design. The bedside table is fixed in the corner, and the bed moves around this.”
In late 2014, with the project team still not agreed on a furniture supplier, a ‘mini- competition’ was held, and Knightsbridge/Taurus Fitted Bedrooms ‘came out on top’. Matthew Balaam said: “The curvature of the vanity top within the en suite has been replicated within the desktop and wardrobe, and also ties in
INTERACTIVE TOUCHSCREEN “Recornect supplied the interactive touchscreen, which has been integrated into the fitted furniture. The software’s capabilities are almost limitless, allowing a service-user or carer to control heating, lighting, windows, blinds, access to video calling, information, television, radio, and games, with a single touch. “Taurus Fitted Bedrooms listened to the
brief; sharp corners have been removed, and a ‘hotel style’ anti-ligature en suite created. The vanity unit is fabricated from 12 mm Velstone bonded to 18 mm moisture-resistant MDF. “Working closely with Wallgate’s sanitary products and Kingsway Group’s recessed toilet roll holder, the design ties nicely together. The black opal Vanity top matches the desktop in the bedroom, to link both spaces together. We chose Altro for the flooring and walling, and used subtle tones from the company’s Altro Aquarius flooring and Altro Whiteroc wall cladding – a simple and effective approach in creating a wetroom.
SLIDING DOOR’S ‘CHALLENGES’ “The sliding door has had it challenges; about 20 days before this event the original supplier had to be changed. We worked extremely hard to find an alternative, and one that adheres to
