NEWS COVER STORY Furniture for challenging environments unveiled

Award-winning healthcare solutions provider, Teal LifeCare, has unveiled new products from its forthcoming ‘Solutions for Challenging Environments’ brochure, detailing what it says are ‘innovative new collections designed for client risk levels up to high-risk security environments’. The company said: “Helping to create a sense of calm and space, contemporary new soft seating collections are designed to work in harmony with artwork and colour schemes, and are both robust and secure.” The furniture items are available with durable, ‘healthcare-appropriate’ fabrics and finishes, which can be combined with accents of colour to create uplifting and interesting spaces. New, ‘uniquely styled’ and contemporary designs include ‘Linx’ (pictured), a modular, highly configurable range with soft appearance and feel, characterised by ‘sumptuous levels of comfort’, and said to be ideal for all areas – including lounges, quiet spaces, and reception areas – in settings including acute adult, CAMHS, and young adults.

Teal Life Care added: “Modular design offers an infinite

number of configurations from a limited number of options, including individual mid-back seating units, a corner unit, footstool, table, and arm options. Linx creates a truly flexible space, ideal for socialising and interaction, with fully sealed upholstery to prevent concealment, and for ease of cleaning. Additional weighting options (medium and heavy) are available to limit misuse, increase stability, and maximise safety.” Linx also marks the introduction of ‘Air Piping’, a defined seam that leads the eye with ease around the sofa profile.

A ‘world away’ from traditional facilities

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust has taken ownership of the keys for Rowan View, its new ‘state-of-the art ‘medium secure unit on the Maghull Health Park on Merseyside (The Network – July 2020), designed by architects, IBI Group with considerable service-user involvement. Despite adjustments for safety work practices during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the 123-bed hospital has been handed over by Kier Group just two years since the groundbreaking for the ambitious project.

Elaine Darbyshire, Mersey Care’s executive director of Estates, said: “Rowan View represents a step change in care for service-users, preparing them for life beyond care. It looks and feels totally different from traditional mental health hospitals. More importantly, we believe the expertise and care delivered will be the best in the country, if not beyond.” A new model of care has been devised by senior clinicians, working with existing service-users, for the eight-ward unit. Mersey Care says that it will ‘deliver innovative treatments’, which will improve recovery times for forensic patients presenting with mental health and learning disabilities. “We’re delivering a radical

reshaping of care,” added Mrs Darbyshire. “Our leading experts in forensic care from Mersey Care have visited services across the country to make sure the new development delivers the highest standards.”

THE NETWORK | OCTOBER 2020

The £60 m centre of excellence for forensic care, which includes en suite bathroom facilities for each room, has equal emphasis on transformative care for patients, and a positive culture for staff. Innovations include immersive technology, sensory rooms, and ‘media walls’ (from Recornect), which will provide vulnerable patients with access to services and new forms of therapy, and aid interactive training and staff wellbeing sessions. Service-users will have safe computer access to care plans, activity plans, ordering meals, viewing their personal photographs, and the ability to maintain contact with family and carers ‘virtually’. A café space also opens out into extensive flower gardens, plus recreational areas and places for quietness and reflection. Art and light displays which support calmness and relaxation have been created in consultation with service- users. Mersey Care describes Rowan View as ‘a world away from older models of mental healthcare'.

Mersey Care added: “Rowan View brings together expertise on a new site which already includes research and conference facilities, and will include a further development of a £33 million low secure learning disability unit.
