ESTATE REDEVELOPMENT

service-providers, minimising both time and transport costs.4

To achieve this integration, day care and outpatient services are key components of a comprehensive support service for mentally ill and older people, along with their carers and families.5 The built environment of these facilities in the community plays an important role in the users’ wellbeing – via the psychological effect it has on them.6 So, what can architecture do to facilitate a shift from institutional to inspiring healthcare environments in the community? With this academic consultancy project the research team aimed to shed some light on how to achieve this practically.7

Methodology

Research followed a mixed methods approach, gathering data on best practice in community mental health facilities globally. First, a literature review was conducted in relation to healthcare architecture and the evidence base. Subsequently, best-practice case studies from 15 countries were gathered from grey literature. In parallel, interviews were conducted with international experts from both Europe and the US.

Data collected were evaluated using the SCP model (Fig 1), a tool specifically developed for the evaluation of psychiatric environments, identifying the relation between policy, care regime, and patient- focused environment, to help identify which environments staff and users perceive as best and most suitable for their environments of care.8

Findings

The findings in relation to the built environment of community mental health facilities, and how they could become inspiring points of reference, were selected and organised under 32 key themes. Each theme was organised in two sections: i) the first comprised a set of recommendations deriving from scientific sources, and ii) the second presented relevant case studies accompanied by photos, showing how these recommendations have been implemented. Each recommendation has been further analysed using the SCP model.
