observed in service-users who had not only gone through their documents, but also understood their content well.” Tracy Colpitts pointed out that offering
a CoWin Play media wall fits well with the current zeitgeist: “We live in a high- tech society, where most people are accustomed to using devices such as smartphones or tablets. When service- users see the CoWin on admission, it is often reassuring for them because they intuitively know what it’s for. For example, we upload their favourite music or family photos, which in many cases results in a strong calming effect. Should there still be some aggression, with CoWin we always have a very safe basis for staying in touch, for example through video chat. Since we began using the CoWin de- escalation solution, the number of forced
lockdowns has fallen dramatically, and the working atmosphere in the department has improved enormously. This is one of the reasons why we chose to extend this working dynamic and the technology more broadly to our new units.”
A holistic approach to technology and care Recornect’s unique approach is rooted in a powerful vision of the deployment of technology in healthcare settings. This vision touches on various fundamentals in the areas of both service-user / patient and caregiver, always centred on the relationship between the two. Take, for example, themes such as autonomy, control, collaboration, and conditions for recovery. Together with Recornect founder, Erik Kuijpers, we will now explore some
CoWin Play – second system’s development
With many years’ successful use in higher acuity mental healthcare facilities of Recornect’s CoWin system, there was a demand to be able to implement what the company dubs its ‘work dynamics’ in medium-security units. Based on this, and in close cooperation with the NHS LPFT Team, Recornect developed the CoWin Play. Recornect said: “CoWin Play has the same powerful features as the GRASP software platform, but its primary purpose is interactive communication, entertainment, education and, to a much lesser extent, de-escalation. Recornect continues to work hard on new developments in both hardware and software – such as, for example, an electronic learning environment for children with mental health issues, so that the learning and educational process are not severely interrupted when they are in inpatient care settings.” Recornect explained that The CoWin Play ‘media wall’ is a medium-security solution ‘specifically designed for bedrooms or comfort rooms in crisis units for intellectual disability care, and child and adolescent psychiatry. It said: “Like the CoWin 32 and48, the newly developed
CoWin Play runs on Recornect’s tried and tested GRASP software platform, but has a range of apps and home automation, fully adapted to the profile of users in a medium- security environment.” The CoWin Play is installed in a landscape orientation, and can be seamlessly incorporated into new or existing furniture. Key features include: l Video communication between client and care staff.

of these deeper themes to explain the success of Recornect’s particular approach to technology and care. I asked Erik how he explains the fact
that Recornect’s technology solutions are often so quickly and widely embraced in healthcare settings? He said: “‘Powerful, robust hardware, proven in practice for years, is one of the pillars of this success. However, I would prefer to call us a software company rather than a hardware company. That’s because the core of Recornect’s success is defined by a deep, fundamental, and practical understanding of the provision of psychiatric care, which translates into our GRASP software. It is software that reflects the dynamics between service-user and caregiver that we have learned to profoundly understand through years of experience in practice.”
