FURNITURE

“For a small charge,” Vicky Taylor explained, “we can collect and recycle any furniture when delivering new items to a site. The customer then receives a certificate that the furniture has been recycled in an environmentally-friendly manner, and that none has gone to landfill,

plus confirmation of the amount of C02 saved. This removal and recycling service can be a major benefit for the customer, because once its new furniture is delivered, it no longer faces the significant logistical challenge of disposing of old items sustainably.”

The Porcini ‘café-sized security tables’ are available with a choice of top options, and have a fully sealed moulded polyethylene base, and a weighted, tip-resistant design.

‘Carbon-neutral’ businesses Operating sustainably is now key to most manufacturing businesses, Teal being no exception. As part of the group’s commitment to sustainability, Senator has its own recycling business, called Sustain, which has two dedicated recycling centres in the UK. Through Sustain, customers can access a number of services, including the collection and recycling of waste and packaging, and recycling of old furniture from any manufacturer. Every element of furniture, which is disassembled into components and segregated into waste streams – typically wood, metal, plastic, fabrics, and foams – is recycled.

Factory tour

Towards the end of my visit – having seen many of the items discussed – Production manager at the Lower Darwen site, Rob Lowson, took me on a tour of the site’s factory and storage facility. It was soon evident that furniture manufacture there is undertaken via a combination of traditional manual skills, such as hand upholstering and assembly, and using the latest equipment, such as a Gerber automatic fabric cutter. When I saw the machine, the operator had just set it up to quickly, but extremely accurately, cut out around 30 different fabric shapes for one upholstered chair. Rob Lowson, who explained that the machine had enabled Teal to reduce material wastage by between 10 and 20 per cent, said: “We operate on an agile manufacturing basis here, offer short lead

times, and find that a large share of our work is bespoke, including in healthcare. When developing and manufacturing new furniture, we take considerable account of customer feedback, the goal being to design and develop versatile products with a design, functionality, robustness, and features, which will make them stand out from the competition, keep customers happy, last for a long time, and, of course, ensure the business’s continued commercial success.”
