The nights are drawing in, and it’s time for the 2018 Healthcare Estates conference and exhibition (it is being held from 9-10 October at Manchester Central). The annual IHEEM event offers another opportunity to learn about the DiMHN and its work. We will be on stand G1 throughout the two days, so come and say ‘hello’. We will also be presenting in the Design and Construction Theatre on the exhibition floor on Tuesday 9 October at noon – the ideal opportunity for you to learn more about the DiMHN directors, the workstreams they lead, and their achievements. Service-users and carers are those most
COVER PICTURE: The new Caudwell International Children’s Centre,‘the UK’s first independent purpose-built centre dedicated to multidisciplinary autism diagnosis, support, and research’, will open later this year. As well as helping the children to navigate the building, the distinctive curvilinear design removes any potential perceived ‘institutional’ appearance.

affected by mental healthcare environments, and the DiMHN works tirelessly to improve these. With this in mind our workstreams have undertaken some exciting work over the summer. The Stakeholder Engagement workstream has been busy developing a tool to assist all those involved in the design process to ensure that all goes smoothly, incorporates stakeholders at the appropriate time, and achieves desired outcomes. A draft document has been circulated for consultation, and the results of this will be incorporated into the final document. This will form another in the series of ‘Design with People in Mind’ booklets, and will be launched at the AGM, which will be held on Wednesday 10 October at 12 noon (lunch will be provided) at the conference venue. The Testing workstream and the Building
Research Establishment (BRE) have held a series of workshops, and are moving towards producing a document outlining standards for some mental

Meanwhile, the Research workstream is taking forward joint work with the National Association of Psychiatric Intensive Care and Low Secure Units (NAPICU). Work has commenced on a project looking at evaluating seclusion room usage in psychiatric intensive care. After many years at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull, where our annual exhibition’s size has increased year on year, it was agreed that next year the conference and exhibition will move to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. This looks to be a very popular move; already the exhibition space is nearly full, so if you are thinking of exhibiting, now is the time to book. The Conference group is already working on the conference programme. The call for presentations went out in July, but there is still time to put in a submission. The awards dinner will also be held at the Ricoh
