Welcome to the first edition of The Network of 2021, and the first with me as the new Chair of the Design in Mental Health Network. Before we look ahead, I’d like to firstly extend my gratitude to Jenny Gill, who has been involved with DiMHN for over 15 years. Her leadership and dedication to improving mental health spaces has been hugely impactful. I’m delighted to be taking the wheel alongside Jonathan Campbell as Vice-Chair – a professionally Chartered NHS associate director of Capital Development, who has worked in mental health, acute and community services, for over 20 years. For Jonathan, recovery-led environments are vital; robust and secure environments must also be therapeutic and healing. This alignment of values, and the combination of our respective experience, stands us in strong stead at the helm of the DiMHN Board.

COVER PICTURE:

Specialist window supplier to the mental health sector, Britplas, says it has experienced sustained growth since the inception of its Safevent window some 15 years ago. The product has been continuously developed, with the latest innovation being the launch of the patented Multask handle – an opening winder, patient thumb lock, and staff lock within a single anti- ligature, stainless steel component.

The Board also welcomes three new Directors – all experts in their fields. Firstly, we welcome Katharine Lazenby, a People Participation Worker for East London NHS Foundation Trust, and expert-by-experience, who works to increase the meaningful participation of service-users and carers in the transformation of community mental health services.

We also welcome Garry Charlton, managing director at CAD21 – a mechanical and electrical consultancy specialising in healthcare design, who is passionate about creating MEP solutions that are subtle by design, and allow safe access for maintenance

10 Highlights and challenges in an eventful 15 years Last November’s ‘virtual’ Design in Mental Health Network 2020 AGM saw Jenny Gill, the Network’s Chair, step down. Jonathan Baillie asked her to reflect on her professional career, how her experience as a service-user guided her work as a healthcare planner, and her greatest challenges and achievements in a 15-year association with the DiMHN.

16 Plenty to report despite a disrupted year

Alongside marking the retirement of Jenny Gill as DiMHN Chair, and her succession by Philip Ross, the DiMHN’s 2020 AGM, held ‘virtually’ on 4 November, saw reports presented by each Workstream’s lead on its activities over a busy, but heavily disrupted, previous year. There were, however, a number of highlights even in a difficult year, and plenty of exciting activity planned for 2021 and beyond.

21 Designing for CAMHS: investing in the future

Andrew Arnold, an award-winning architect and director at Gilling Dod Architects, considers the practice’s approach to the design of CAMHS facilities – and acknowledges that some of his own views on fit-for-purpose design have been shaped by the experiences of his daughter, who has recently experienced poor mental health.

29 Service-users must share their experiences

Dr Robert MacDonald, RIBA, Reader in Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University, and the 2019 winner of the DiMHN Recognition Award, discusses his own episodes of mental illness, and how these, and his work and as an architect, have convinced him that service-user and staff involvement are key to optimal mental healthcare facility design.

Additional expertise brought on board Journal of the Design in Mental Health Network

without disruption to mental healthcare, and Steve Brown, Professor of Health and Organisational Psychology at Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University. His research interests are around service-user experiences of secure mental healthcare, and social remembering within marginalised and excluded groups.

Along with our new Board members, an important addition to our team this year is the newly created role of Associate. Our four new Associates have all volunteered their time and talents to work alongside the Board. In this capacity, we’re delighted to have the involvement of Lianne Knotts, director of Medical Architecture, Richard Brown, Estates director of Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, Jennifer Aspinall, Design manager at Vinci Construction, and Kevin Gorman, Chairman of Britplas.

I’m sure you’ll agree that this depth and breadth of expertise marks an exciting time for DiMHN. Over the coming months, we’ll be contacting some of you to learn more of what you think would help you create better spaces for recovery. We’ll be posting all relevant updates on our LinkedIn page: linkedin.com/company/ dimhn. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this edition.
