a site which was previously derelict and falling into disrepair. The formation of new access points, desire lines, vistas, and circulation routes across the site means the transformation of this brownfield site is realised, and by including Sunshine House in the site masterplanning, a sustainable and holistic solution has been created (Figs 5 & 6).
Art installations and wayfinding Via a series of workshops, an arts narrative was settled on. Drawing is something that every child does, and is immediately familiar, expressive, and relatable. This fitted with the ethos of the new service, and
so the idea of a continuous drawing threading through the building was born. The images reflect emotions, activities, identity, and hope, and were developed to complement the wayfinding strategy for the new unit. This approach was followed through in the external signage and unit branding (Figs 7 & 8).
The Health Stars charity launched the ‘By Young People, For Young People’ campaign during Children’s Mental Health Week 2019 as part of a larger fund-raising and mental health awareness initiative promoted in the city. Boxes were delivered to schools containing a host of mental health resources, and setting each school a challenge to help raise money for the unit, and to give messages of hope and support to vulnerable young people. The submitted artwork and messages were collated into a book (Fig 9), and delivered to the new unit in time for its first visitors.
Construction
The supporting facilities at the Inspire CAMHS unit, such as the reception (pictured), visiting areas, therapy spaces, and the school, form the spine of the building, located to the north of the wards.

The project was tendered via a two-stage design and build process, and delivered under the PAGABO framework. Local contractor, Houlton, was awarded the contract – which included both the new- build and refurbishment elements. The new Inspire facility was handed over in early 2020, and is now fully operational, and supporting vulnerable young people, service-users, and their families, from across the region.
Inspire CAMHS is a great example of what outcomes are possible even in the face of significant site constraints, budgetary pressures, and planning restrictions. The utopia of a complete new-build solution was just not feasible with the available budget, but, through imagination and innovation, the final design, expanding and linking to the existing Children’s unit building, is seamless. The new unit’s location in the heart of a residential urban area presented challenges, but these were overcome through clever design, and the finished building proudly puts mental health services at the heart of the community it serves.
The Trust stayed true to its vision and aspirations, and succeeded in delivering on the quality that the service deserved. The buy-in, energy, and passion displayed by the newly formed clinical team was unbelievable, especially from the lead clinician, Paul Warwick, and the work of Health Stars, and local schools, in creating the ‘By Young People, For Young People’ campaign, was truly moving.
Seeing the feedback on social media as staff and young people experienced the new building for the first time is a source of real pride. From personal experience, I cannot help but think of the parents accessing the building at a time of extreme crisis, and just hope, in a very small way, that our design just helps make the process that bit more positive.
