Prime Minister unveils ‘raft of prevention measures’

Extra funding to help local authorities strengthen and deliver local suicide prevention plans, updated professional standards for England’s social workers to increase their knowledge and skills when helping those with mental health issues, and training for all new teachers on spotting the signs of mental ill health, were among ‘a raft of prevention measures’ unveiled by Prime Minister, Theresa May, on 17 June. Downing Street said the measures – ‘part of an overhaul of society’s approach to mental illness’ – would ‘make sure people have the confidence and skills they need to identify mental health issues before they become critical, particularly in young people’.

Other measures announced included:

l Updated statutory guidance to make clear schools’ responsibilities to protect children’s mental wellbeing.

l All 1.2 million NHS staff to be encouraged to take suicide prevention training from the Zero Suicide Alliance.

l Support for school mental health leads to help children struggling with self- harm and risk of suicide.

l Access to ‘world-class teaching and training materials’ for all teachers to use in the classroom, to meet the new requirements for mental health education for all primary/secondary pupils.

Theresa May – pictured visiting Southfield Academy in South-West London – said: “We should never accept a rise in mental health problems as inevitable. It’s time to rethink how we tackle this issue, which is why I believe the next great revolution in mental health should be in prevention.” Further plans ‘to drive a step-change in public awareness around looking after one’s

mental health’ include a national awareness campaign, ‘Every Mind Matters’, launching this October. The Government will also launch a ‘breathing space’ scheme to provide respite from debt collection while people in debt seek support to help prevent the onset of mental health problems. The Prime Minister also announced:

l £1 m in funding for the Office of Students for a competition ‘to find innovative new ways to support mental health at universities and colleges’.

l Research following the government’s Children in Need review to build new evidence on supporting children who have faced adversity, abuse, and neglect.

l Greater transparency in how money is spent on mental health services, with a commitment to independent audits to ensure that funding committed under the NHS Long-Term plan ‘reaches the frontline’.

l Publication of a White Paper before the year-end in response to Sir Simon Wessely’s review of the Mental Health Act, ‘setting out the steps taken to tackle unequal treatment faced by ethnic minority groups’.

Faster-fit, adhesive-free flooring solution

Forbo Flooring System says that while damp subfloors are ‘a general ‘issue’ in the construction market, the current flooring solutions available to address this ‘result in a long, complex, and costly installation process’. In response, it has launched ‘a new

easy, economic, and hassle-free solution’ which can be installed directly onto damp subfloors – Modul’Up TE. Forbo launched its adhesive-free sheet vinyl collection, Modul’up, in 2018, but has since continued to develop a version for installation over damp subfloors with up to 97% RH. It explained: “Modul’Up TE delivers all the benefits of the Modul’up Compact range, but with the advantage of Forbo’s Aqua Block embossed layer.

“This allows a direct loose lay installation on damp subfloors. The Aqua Block layer enables the subfloor to breathe, directing the moisture to the periphery of the

room, rather than up through the floorcovering itself.” Garry Bateman, head of Technical Sales, said: “To ensure moisture is dissipated correctly we have also designed an easy-to-fit, breathable skirting for use with the new range. As installing Modul’Up TE requires no adhesives, downtime is reduced significantly; the floor is ready for use as soon as it has been installed. In fact, the total time required for a 100 m2 installation – including the waiting time before furniture can be placed back – is one day for Modul’Up TE, compared with other solutions’ several days.” The range is available in a choice of

six contemporary designs, with either a wood or mineral embossed finish.

He brings with him over 25 years’ sales industry experience, with his ‘extensive knowledge’ gained in previous roles covering a wide range of sales channels – from the government and military, to the commercial and domestic markets. He said: “I’ve been aware of Wallgate for many years, and only heard good reports about the company as a forward-thinking, caring employer. I was looking for a role I could enjoy and find fulfilling, and during my time at Wallgate so far, I have demonstrated that I can make a real difference, which has been hugely rewarding.”

Day to day, Mike Hedley-Harper will work alongside Commercial manager, Phil Thorne, to drive the business forward in the commercial and public sales sector.
