New image management solution from OptraSCAN

End-to-end digital pathology solution provider OptraSCAN has announced the introduction of a combined image management and image storage solution, to enable and simplify the digital transformation of pathology laboratories. The OptraSCAN IMAGEPath image management system is an open platform that can easily integrate with scanners from multiple manufacturers and over 20 different image formats, in addition to being compatible with external third-party AI applications for pathology. The

combined offer includes image management and 50 GB to

100 TB of storage with multiple adoption tiers at an extremely affordable monthly subscription fee. This provides the flexibility to fit the needs of a wide range of users; from a single pathologist to large, enterprise-level solutions.

Managing, accessing, and sharing images can be costly and complex. The IMAGEPath image management solution was designed by pathologists to simplify digital pathology workflows. It includes a conferencing feature for real-time synchronised or asynchronous review of a case, for online collaborations and second opinions from remote pathologists. Smart features, such as case prioritisation and audit trail, and the ability for users to customise the user interface to optimise laboratory operations and efficiency are also included. The result is enhanced productivity and the enablement of improved health outcomes. OptraSCAN has incorporated and added features to IMAGEPath in response to feedback from users all over the world. This flexible and open platform has features addressing the needs of pathologists, pharma partners, AI partners and academic research centres. OptraSCAN remains committed to innovation and the relentless pursuit of excellence, to offer compelling and affordable solutions.

RCPath launches 2024 Achievement Awards

The Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) has launched the 2024 edition of its Achievement Awards, with a new category recognising sustainability added this year. The RCPath Achievement Awards

were inaugurated to celebrate excellence in pathology practice and promote high standards in pathology education, training, and research, to deliver the best patient care. These awards complement the College’s other schemes that celebrate public engagement and research. The 2024 Achievement Awards will celebrate excellence in pathology service provision through teamwork. This year the College’s awards panel have introduced a new category – Sustainability. Four team awards will be given to teams who have achieved above and beyond what would be expected in their usual course of their work. For example, quality improvement activities, setting up new services, innovation in service delivery, reaching new patient groups, or educating

and training staff and students. For the new Sustainability award the

awards panel are looking for innovative solutions for pathology services that have saved carbon (or carbon equivalents) with a quantification, that would be beneficial to be shared with the wider pathology community. In particular the panel will be looking for pioneering evidence and not just making incremental steps to becoming more sustainable. Evidence should include actions taken over and above the normal requirements of the team’s work. Applications must provide evidence of impact, and of good leadership/championing practice in engaging and inspiring others. Teams can nominate themselves but only College members can nominate. The full set of criteria and nomination form can be found on the RCPath website. The closing date for nominations is Monday 15 April. The awards will be presented to two members from the winning teams at the College’s Annual Dinner on 20 June.

Strategic partnership to supercharge AI in healthcare

The Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) Hartree Centre and the Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust have announced a strategic partnership to advance artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare across the Trust to optimise patient outcomes. The collaboration is a pivotal step towards realising the potential of advanced digital technologies in NHS healthcare to elevate the quality and effectiveness of patient care and contribute to healthier lives.

The announcement closely follows Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt’s budget announcement of £3.4 billion funding to support digital transformation in the NHS as part of wider plans to boost productivity.

Under this strategic collaboration, the

Hartree Centre and Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust will embark on a series of scoping projects. The projects will explore the adoption and integration of advanced digital technologies, from AI to quantum computing.

Located at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory,

at Sci-Tech Daresbury in the Liverpool City Region, the Hartree Centre is the UK’s only supercomputing centre dedicated to industry engagement. It is home to some of the most advanced computing, data and AI technologies in the UK, enabling productivity, innovation and growth in UK businesses and organisations. Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, serving over 1.4 million people and managing more than three million outpatient attendances annually. It is particularly renowned for its leadership and provision of mental healthcare to patients nationally.
