Achieving sustainable and functional design
An architectural project at the Restinga Extremo Sul Hospital was developed obeying two fundamental premises – sustainability and functionality.
To achieve the sustainability goal the authors needed to cause the least impact to the environment, respecting the natural unevenness of the terrain. To meet the functionality goal the
authors located the different units present in the hospital, in accordance with their relationship affinities, in order to ensure greater privacy and independence between distinct flows. The hospital building is a three-floor
structure which connects to the remainder of the hospital complex via two runways, allowing communication on each floor with the rest of the services offered by the hospital. The hospital is considered to be a living
organism, where there is a permanent interaction between the flow of patients, visitors and companions, staff, equipment, clothing, food, medicine, and solid waste. The layout of the hospital building was designed to meet the criteria for access of outpatients and inpatients, visitors and companions, staff and supplies, seeking to minimise any interference between the different streams. The final solution was a horizontalised
hospital, with 19,145 m2 , 116 beds (101
hospital beds, 10 ICU Adult beds and five intermediate care beds), built over three floors, working with the natural unevenness of the terrain. With this design, each floor has a direct connection to the street, giving access to the public and minimising the need to use elevators, which contributes to lower energy consumption. Over the last 30 years Paulo Cassiano has devoted himself to the development of architectural designs, especially healthcare subjects. He is responsible for hospitals expansion projects, totaling over 120,000 m2 built space
including Santo Antonio Children Hospital, Dom Vicente Scherer Hospital, and Restinga Extremo Sul Hospital.
Currently engaged in Centenário Hospital and Conceição Healthcare Group expansions projects.
Carlos E. S. Marczyk Carlos Emílio Stigler Marczyk graduated in civil
engineering in 1979 at UFRGS and has worked for over 30 years in the field of healthcare. He was in charge of the design of, and built, over 115,000 m2
of hospital area.
He has been the infrastructure manager of Moinhos de Vento Hospital for 20 years. He is responsible for the environment chapter in the five JCI international
certifications. He is an ABDEH Associate. He also educates architects and engineers in healthcare.

main avenue – JoãoAntônio da Silveira Road – and inside are all the care units focused on the diagnosis and treatment of outpatients. The immediate care unit has 23 beds for observation and medication for adults, and 13 more beds for paediatric medication and observation. It also has screening and risk classification, clinics, and an emergency treatment room, totaling approximately 1300 m2 of area. The outpatient clinic covers approximately 1,200 m2
and includes
20 clinics covering different specialties. Also on this floor is the surgical center, with four operating and recovery rooms, the obstetrics center unit, with four rooms of PPP (antepartum, delivery and post- partum) and two operative delivery rooms and the sterilisation center. In total these units cover around 1500 m2
. The diagnostics unit serves both
inpatients and outpatients. It includes 10 examination rooms including CT, endoscopy and X-ray. This unit is spread over a total of 800 m2
. This floor also includes a 17-bed
inpatient unit for paediatric patients, covering a total of 540 m2
. Access to this
inpatient unit is via the intermediate floor. Also on this floor are 10 beds for intensive hospitalisation, with a close relationship to the surgical center. The main hospital access is located on
the middle floor, accessed via a side street, through which visitors and patients
