Healthcare specialists celebratesuccess in 2018 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise A number of UK healthcare specialists have

been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, which are presented each year by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on her birthday, 21 April. The awards are given on the advice of the Prime Minister, assisted by an advisory committee comprising representatives of Government, industry, commerce and the trade unions.

Activinsights, a Cambridge based SME that specialises in delivering lifestyle insights and behavioural data analysis for healthcare professionals, won an award in the International Trade category. The company focuses on the analysis of human activities and behaviours using professional wearables. Its platform and secure data infrastructure digitally support healthcare services in more than 40 countries, aiding diagnosis, recovery, lifestyle management and personalised behaviour change programmes. Heart and respiratory diseases, obesity and diabetes present an enormous challenge for healthcare providers, and lifestyle is crucial to the prevention, treatment and management of these conditions. The waterproof Activinsights Band is designed to operate for up to a year without charging, and offers lifestyle measurements in a bid to improve health and performance. Instant data analysis generates tailored reports containing a variety of different metrics and visualisations, such as physical activity and sleep patterns, providing behavioural insights for healthcare professionals.

Richard Thomas, managing director, said:

“We are proud to have received recognition of this achievement from the Queen’s Awards for

Enterprise, building on our success at the 2017 Wearable Tech Show Awards, where we won the Digital Health Technology Award. It sets the scene for an exciting future, tackling global healthcare challenges with products and services made in Britain.”

GAMA Healthcare, a supplier of disinfectant wipes and infection prevention products to the NHS, received the award in International Trade in recognition of its rapid growth in overseas sales.

GAMA, which was established in 2004 by two junior doctors, Guy Braverman and Allen Hanouka, developed a single universal disinfectant wipe that was effective on a range of healthcare acquired infections, at a time when it was traditional to use a two-step approach of first cleaning then disinfecting surfaces and equipment in hospitals. Since then, the business has grown rapidly, with more than 130 employees and a new £2.5 million R&D facility in Halifax, West Yorkshire, under development. Its products are increasingly sought overseas, now selling to 60 countries worldwide, particularly in China and Australia, where it has opened up offices. In recognition of that growth, the company received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, specifically for Outstanding Short-Term Growth in overseas sales over the last three years - from £2.4 m to £4.9 m - in Europe, Australia and the Middle East.

Dr Allen Hanouka, co founder and managing director, added: “GAMA is now one of the leading suppliers of infection control solutions to the NHS, but increasingly our products are bought in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We’re proud to be flying the flag

internationally for British expertise and innovation, and are grateful to the Queen’s Awards for their recognition of that success.” Privately-owned Trio Healthcare was presented the award under the Innovation category for its patented silicone technology, which is improving the lives of ostomates around the world. The silicone adhesive is designed to prevent abdominal stomas from leaking. Lloyd Pearce, managing director from Trio,

said: “We are delighted to win such a prestigious award for our contribution to ostomy care. Due to the stigma and embarrassment associated with body waste and bag leakage, a person’s social life and well-being is dependent on the ostomy adhesive and bag’s performance. Too many people around the world were suffering from leakage and irritated skin, so as a company we have made it our mission to provide an alternative solution. Our products offer reassurance and comfort, so the wearer can get on with their everyday lives without fear of sore skin.”

This is the second time Trio Healthcare has been the recipient of a Queen’s Award for Enterprise. In 2011 the company was awarded the Queen’s Award - International Trade.
