Decontamination

year’s Autumn Study Day, titled “Decontamination - Dare to Defy the Dogma”. Jimmy Walker, Chair of the CSC, said he welcomed efforts to improve sustainability, commenting: “There is so much that the NHS can contribute to combatting climate change. The CSC and its individual members need to have a more proactive role in promoting strategies including reduce, reuse and recycle to lesson our impact on the planet.” In addition to discussion of sustainability, CSC

will be returning the focus of decontamination back to CJD – given the difficulties that hospitals face in removing protein, particularly from devices with hard-to-clean lumens. Against a backdrop of COVID-19, the issue has

been overshadowed in recent years, but the problem has not gone away. Protein removal remains a challenge and operating theatres, SSDs and industry must continue to work together to tackle the problem.

Elisabetta Caselli, Associate Professor and Chair of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, will discuss the exciting topic of probiotic-based disinfection. By using Bacillus probiotics as disinfection strategy Prof. Casseli’s group has been able to reduce the presence of pathogens, hospital-associated infection incidence, antibiotic consumption, as well as reduce costs related to management of patients. In addition to being used in hospitals, the technology has been used to successfully decontaminate subway trains.

Mary O’Riordan, Co-Founder of HaPPE Earth, is a champion for sustainability and the circular economy, and brings together medical professionals to consider high quality functional products such as single use plastic PPE that provide a compostable medical waste solution. Mary has faced many challenges but has always refused to give up

Neil Watson, Specialty Trainee, Neurology & Internal Medicine, will provide an overview of prions disease and the implications for decontamination units. In his presentation, he will discuss his work and publications related to the diagnosis and surveillance of CJD and the current implications for decontamination and sterilisation units.

Jim Tinsdeall, Authorised Engineer - Decontamination, will continue the discussion with a presentation titled: “Interpreting and understanding CJD CSSD guidance on difficult to clean instruments”. Jim will present on the current issues of cleaning a range of surgical instruments and the challenges faced by CSSDs to ensure ongoing patient safety.

Karren Staniforth, Consultant Clinical Scientist, will discuss a number of microbiological issues related to laundry and Bacillus cereus blood stream infections across different wards and two different hospitals sites associated with the reprocessing and storage of laundry materials.

These infections were exacerbated by higher than normal summer temperatures – a lesson for us all in the dangerous impact of climate change.

Wayne Spencer, Independent Consultant on Sterilisation and Healthcare Engineering, will provide clarification of the standards and HTM guidance for laundry decontamination. Drawing on his expertise, he will outline the current guidance and standards that the laundry industry has to work to and discuss the confusion that may arise between the various documents.

John Prendergast, Senior Decontamination Engineer, will provide an insight into the decontamination of semi-critical devices, raising the question: “Is over estimation of risks less bad than underestimation?” John is well versed in the issues of decontamination of semi-critical devices and will discuss how the understanding of risk assessments and challenges faced in cleaning these devices are paramount to providing instruments that are safe at the point of use.

Robbie Cormie, Decontamination Lead, will also offer an insight into the integration of decontamination services in Liverpool. Robbie has many years of experience as a decontamination lead and will discuss the challenges and issues of implementing new facilities to improve patient care and safety. Jimmy Walker (CSC Chair) said that the CSC Committee is looking forward to welcoming delegates to the LMI Conference Centre: “The ASD is going to be a terrific meeting and we look forward to welcoming all those with an interest in decontamination. “You will not want to miss this meeting which will give you an opportunity to interact with the speakers as well as network with fellow decontamination professionals,” he commented. The event will take place 16 October, 2023, at the LMI conference centre, in Liverpool, and carries 7 CPD points for the day.
