operational strategies that can deliver the NHS vision for a long-term sustainable plan for better outcomes, and better value. The Government is promising to fund the NHS to replace its ageing 20th century technology; the NHS must be fit for the 21st century. Many NHS Trusts are already committing to using modern technology to redesign services and create a modern NHS, where outpatient visits are reduced by a third. Richard Murray, of The King’s Fund, has commented that “for outpatients, technology will be used to redesign services to avoid up to a third of outpatient visits – that’s 30 million visits a year.”2

From my own ongoing research, it is clear that many hospitals have 450 seat

conference area The seated conference area is set within the exhibition area to allow easy access to exhibition stands. Refreshments and lunch are provided to qualifying conference delegates. There is also a separate bar that will be open during the two days for buying refreshments and snacks. 90+ Exhibitors: A large independent exhibition comprising of 90+ medical equipment suppliers takes place alongside the conference, showcasing the latest innovations in healthcare technology and services.

Sponsorship from the exhibitors enables the EBME Expo to be offered free of charge to registered conference delegates and exhibition visitors. It is FREE to register online: www.ebme.co.uk/ registration-options

had to adopt a ‘make do and mend’ attitude, prioritising only the most urgent purchases. This is not a sensible business plan, and does not meet the aspirations of the Secretary of State for Health, or the NHS Executive. NHS Trusts must align their technology replacement plans with their long-term operational strategies. Therefore, not investing in technology will hinder plans to improve care, and ultimately result in higher long-term costs. Dr. Helen Meese (who is speaking at this year’s EBME Expo) says that: “While the debate on ‘pressures on front-line services’ rages on, the one area that has so far been overlooked is the role of technology. Technology and the biomedical engineers who develop, procure and maintain this technology, have the potential to not only ease the burden on services but also significantly cut costs. Technical innovations are set to revolutionise healthcare in the coming decades. Big data will allow doctors to undertake predictive modelling and trending to pinpoint for example, outbreaks of disease linked to environmental conditions. The development of tele-health and smart phone apps which access body- worn measurement systems are also set to transform the way illnesses like diabetes and heart disease are controlled and monitored. While surgical robotic manipulators will become more prevalent allowing surgeons to navigate deep inside the body, avoiding the risks and complications of traditional open surgery.”3

The Venue

The EBME Expo is being held on 30 June and 1 July 2021 inside the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes. This indoor venue allows plenty of room for both delegates and exhibitors; it is easily accessible by train or car and has 1,800 free car parking spaces available. Situated in Milton Keynes, within easy access of the Milton Keynes mainline train station and the M1. This location will be familiar to previous visitors, as it is still at Stadium MK (home to the MK Dons Football Club), where the seminar has been held since 2012. All qualifying healthcare professionals involved in maintaining, buying, using or managing medical equipment are welcome to register for free. Attending delegates typically work in areas such as procurement, maintenance, user training, and management of inventories. Each qualifying delegate that attends the conference will receive a certificate for their continuing professional development (CPD) record. Delegates attending the conference will also be eligible for a prize draw at the end of each day.
