E BME EXPO PR EVI EW

Spotlight on medical device technology

The EBME chairman, Dr. John Sandham, discusses what to expect at the 2021 EBME Expo on 30 June and 1 July 2021, being held in the Marshall Arena, in Milton Keynes.

The role clinical engineers and maintenance staff have played during the COVID global pandemic has been truly exceptional, and we are extremely proud to be able to support the industry with this annual event. The EBME Expo team have put in place a number of measures to ensure that this year’s exhibition is in line with the agreed Government framework for reopening of exhibitions. We have covered everything required, including physical distancing, cleaning and hygiene measures, protect and detect, and communication. Exhibitions will continue to provide an incredibly important tool for businesses to bounce back after the challenges brought about over the last year. The EBME Expo is an independent exhibition and conference, bringing together healthcare professionals that are responsible for the management, procurement, operation, and maintenance of medical equipment. This includes staff such as engineers, nurses, doctors, buyers, ODPs, and other healthcare

professionals that buy, maintain, or use medical technology. The aim of the Expo is to showcase the latest innovations in medical technology, and impart best practice with regard to asset management, acquisition, use, and maintenance. It is important to raise awareness of how improved management of healthcare technology, and connectivity, can lead to better NHS productivity and lower healthcare costs. Ultimately, sharing knowledge leads to improvements in best practice, enhancing patient safety, and helping hospitals to deliver sustainable budgets. Putting together a programme that meets the needs of a wide range of attending delegates is always challenging. Due to the success of our last event in 2019, the EBME Expo will once again be at its new larger venue with a two-day programme covering a wide range of technical and management innovations.

enable the technology to be used in such a way that it improves clinical decision support and enables better patient outcomes. The Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP, Secretary of State for Health, stated that: “Better technology is not a ‘nice to have’ but a vital to have for the NHS. When people say that better technology is a ‘nice to have’ that costs too much, I say wrong again. Better technology is vital to have, and embracing it is the only way to make the NHS sustainable over the long term. If you work in the NHS, in any part of the service, far too often old, out- of-date 20th century technology gets in the way of your ability to do your job. Every board needs to know what questions to ask, how to hold their CEO to account; every medical director and chief nurse needs to know how technology is going to transform what their teams do and lead that adoption.”1 Hancock has set out the future for technology in the NHS, and why, for any NHS organisation wanting to be the best it possibly can be, rejecting the best possible technology is a mistake.

The NHS, and healthcare organisations in general, face budgetary pressures and, as Hancock has pointed out, investing in new technology is a ‘must do’, but it is fraught with difficulty and confusion. Investing in technology is inevitable, as the latest technology can deliver more financially and clinically sustainable outcomes. Healthcare organisations must aspire to have multi- year replacement plans aligned with their
