Sustainable theatres

evidence, and success stories. By championing the Green Theatre Checklist,

AfPP has also helped to place perioperative practitioners at the heart of national and international sustainability conversations, ensuring the profession’s voice is heard at the highest levels.

Looking ahead In 2020 NHS England set out a road map towards the goal of making the NHS the first Net Zero health service in the world by 2045, in their report: Delivering a Net Zero health service. Since then, the health services in Wales and

Scotland have also announced targets. For Scotland, this target is Net Zero by 2045, while the health service in Wales has committed to a 34% reduction by 2030 in order to meet a wider goal of a Net Zero public sector by 2030. The health service in Northern Ireland has not yet set a target. Achieving these goals will require every

part of the healthcare system to engage, and perioperative services will play a decisive role. Education will be critical. Embedding sustainability into perioperative training and CPD will ensure that practitioners entering the workforce see sustainable practice not as an optional extra but as a professional standard.

Nicola is clear that the profession has both the capacity and the responsibility to lead: “Sustainability has to become part of our

culture in the same way that patient safety is. It needs to be embedded into how we think, how we plan, and how we deliver care.” Nicola closed her session with a powerful

reminder, borrowing from Barack Obama: “We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation

who can do something about it. The operating theatre may seem like a small part of the global picture, but together we can make a real difference.”
