HSMA

Showcasing London’s Healthcare Excellence

As the owner and guardian of 850 buildings in 92-acres of Marylebone, central London, The Howard de Walden Estate is responsible for overseeing a diverse community of residents and businesses, including the shops and restaurants of Marylebone Village and the world class healthcare providers of the esteemed Harley Street Medical Area (HSMA). It manages the majority of the properties within the HSMA including those occupied by The London Clinic, The Harley Street Clinic and King Edward VII, amongst others. Under Howard de Walden’s stewardship the

HSMA supports and nurtures medical excellence in this historic part of London. The late 19th century was a defining period for the Harley Street healthcare district, as doctors began to set up consulting rooms in large numbers, drawn to the area by its attractive building stock and close proximity to several hospitals. There were around 20 doctors in the area in 1860, increasing to 80 by 1900, almost 200 by 1914, and 1,500 by 1948. As well as being home to spectacular grade II

listed buildings, hand in hand with cutting-edge medicine and state-of-the-art technologies, the area has also been home to remarkable British surgeons and pioneers. Perhaps the most brilliant of the area’s early doctors was Joseph Lister, whose ground- breaking work on combating wound infection made major surgical procedures a genuinely viable option for the first time. A memorial statue to Joseph Lister is situated in Portland Place, within The Howard de Walden Estate. Today, HSMA remains synonymous with medical

excellence, known for housing a unique collective of hospitals, clinics and specialists who deliver outstanding patient care. With over 5,000 medical

specialists and 250 clinics working within these 92 acres of Marylebone, the HSMA brings together a community of healthcare professionals who provide access to some of the best medical treatments and services in the world and are at the forefront of advancing global medical practices in London. Howard de Walden’s ongoing strategy is to continue to enrich its healthcare cluster by attracting world class healthcare, technological innovation, and life sciences activity to its vibrant neighbourhood. London is fast becoming a hub for the life

sciences, and this is at forefront of Howard de Walden’s future vision for the area, continuing to shape and develop the prestigious HSMA community and promote it both nationally and internationally. Most recently, In October 2022, it hosted a Healthcare Conference titled London: A Global Hub for Life Sciences. The conference brought together an impressive cast of expert speakers from the city’s leading healthcare institutions, law and real estate to discuss global trends in the life sciences sector, and how the city is driving and responding to those trends. The Covid-19 pandemic has also emphasised the importance of partnership between the life sciences and the healthcare sector to drive forward
