Foreword
Inspiring innovators of the future Alison Ryan CEng, MSc, BSc, FIHEEM, MCIBSE – President, IHEEM
Welcome to the 2023 IHEEM Handbook – a comprehensive guide to the UK’s leading professional institute for the healthcare engineering and estate management sector. It provides information about the role and structure of IHEEM, along with a useful Directory of Company Affiliates, IHEEM Registered Authorising Engineers, plus its Technical Platforms and Branches. We are honoured to have members from both the public and private sector – including key healthcare leaders, NHS estates managers, engineers, consultants, tradespeople, and other professionals from the industry and academia. IHEEM’s overall membership continues to grow, and our student and apprenticeship membership rates are at an all-time high. There is no doubt that IHEEM has an unrivalled wealth of knowledge, expertise, and experience. One of my priorities for my time as President
is to inspire the engineering innovators of the future and promote our expertise, both on an international level, and collaboratively. I believe that we can achieve this by promoting the healthcare engineering and estates management sector to the younger generation through careers events at schools, and I would encourage members to become IHEEM STEM ambassadors and get involved in regional and national events going forward. Professional Development is something that I am also very passionate about, and in my opinion, supporting our members in their careers is a fundamental role of IHEEM. I have always encouraged and supported colleagues to progress with their own career development, and am delighted that IHEEM now offers, through its Knowledge Partners and its online Career Map, a wide range of information,
resources, and training opportunities, to help members across all levels to progress. I believe the healthcare engineering
sector has some great career opportunities, especially in terms of
energy, sustainability, and net zero carbon ambitions. By raising awareness of the key roles of the Estates and Facilities Management professions within healthcare we are enabling sustainable development of the workforce to encourage more diverse people to join the professions. 2022 was an incredibly successful year for IHEEM, with our return to live events, and we have a great calendar of events to look forward to this year. Please check our website and social media regularly to keep up to date with both our national and regional conferences, webinars, and seminars. I look forward to meeting many of you at one of our key events this year. This handbook aims to help you get the most from your IHEEM membership. Once again it is available online as well as in printed form, so you can always access the information you need. I hope that you find it informative and helpful, and I welcome your comments and feedback. Please contact me at
