Social media and website activity high on the agenda for IHEEM’s new team member
In her role as IHEEM’s new Marketing & Communications Manager, Cinmi Mok- Walker, who joined the head office team last month, will focus particularly on building the Institute’s digital presence through further development of its website and social media channels, and will also assist with marketing activities, reporting to COO, Tania Davies. Twenty-eight-year-old Cinmi grew up in Hong Kong, and received her secondary education there, before embarking on a three-year BA (Honours) degree in Communication and English Studies, of which she completed the last year at the University of Portsmouth, gaining a 2:1. She had moved to the city – famous, as she put it, ‘as the home of the Royal Navy’ – partly on the recommendation of a college tutor in Hong Kong, who had grown up and attended school there. She explained: “While Hong Kong was a bit of a concrete jungle, the idea of completing my BA Honours degree in a famous English maritime city with lots of history and character, as well as a thriving academic scene, really appealed.” During her early days in Portsmouth she met her future husband, Grant, who was serving in the Royal Navy, and is now a Senior Rating. Cinmi said: “During the completion of my degree course in Portsmouth, and a subsequent MA in Journalism, Media, and Communications at Cardiff University, Grant and I spent quite a bit of time apart, because he was

largely based at the Rosyth dockyard on the Firth of Forth in Scotland. Early in his time there he had witnessed the construction of the HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, today the fleet flagship of the Royal Navy. Travelling from Cardiff up to Fife involved long train journeys, so I joined Grant living in Scotland for a while, before we later returned south to settle in Portsmouth.” Cinmi has always enjoyed creative activities, and as part of her secondary education had learnt skills including using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, copywriting and editing, corporate image building, and digital document design.
She also developed an interest in, and enthusiasm for, social media – both in her personal life – one of her hobbies is running a beauty and lifestyle ‘blog’ – and for business use. She is hoping to deploy her social and web-based skills to good effect to help strengthen the IHEEM ‘brand’ and promote the Institute’s activities digitally, and also anticipates being involved in wider marketing – for instance of IHEEM’s growing events programme. Before joining IHEEM, she worked as the Marketing & Communications Manager at the Naval Families Federation (NFF) in Portsmouth, an independent charity which champions and represents Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel and their families. The Federation says it has ‘access to policymakers at the highest levels – Government, politicians, the chain of command, and a host of other organisations’. At the NFF, her varied responsibilities included promoting the Federation and its services, raising awareness of its role and influence among serving naval personnel, maintaining and updating the organisation’s website, designing and disseminating promotional material, and sharing news of its activities via its social media platforms and newsletter. She also mentored team members, and managed the Federation’s marketing budget. She said: “After four and a half very enjoyable years at the Federation – where I gained valuable experience – I felt it was time for a change. I am looking forward to getting to know more about IHEEM and its membership; it operates in an interesting and fast-evolving sector, where there is always plenty going on.”
