Things to Do GO FREE The best of the season’s freebies The Broad

Grand Ave Arts: All Access

Over the past decade, Grand Avenue has cemented itself as Downtown L.A.’s cultural destination. Celebrate Bunker Hill’s museums and music halls with free admission and special programming from 11 institutions, including the Broad, LA Opera, REDCAT and more. Feast on food truck fare at Grand Park or MOCA to fuel up between cultural hits.

à Grand Ave between Temple and 6th Sts (grandavearts .tumblr.com). Oct 29 10am–5pm.

CicLAvia: Heart of LA Pedal your way through

Downtown, Chinatown, Westlake, Little Tokyo, the Arts District and Boyle Heights during this street festival celebrating bikes and other forms of engineless locomotion. Take advantage of special discounts, extended hours and open-house events along the five-and-three- quarter-mile car-free route, and walk your bike through four pedestrian zones to find plenty of performances, food trucks and general revelry. à Various locations (ciclavia.org). Oct 16 9am–4pm.

The Great Los Angeles Walk Debunk all of those clichés

about walking in L.A. on this 17-mile urban hike, during which you’re free to dislodge yourself whenever you’d like. On the Saturday before Thanksgiving, hundreds of walkers start on one side of the city and, nine hours later, find themselves on the other— which is one way to avoid traffic, we suppose. Expect a couple of impromptu historical tours and pit stops along the way, as well as a trek up and down a secret staircase or two. à Various locations (greatlawalk.blogpost .com). Nov 19 at 9am.

Time Out Los Angeles October–December 2016

Renegade Craft Fair Cross the final name off your

gift list at the mother of all craft fairs, set to bring more than 275 makers—from handcrafted- jewelry artisans to special s’mores chefs—to this holiday edition at Downtown’s Grand Park. Unlike most other craft fairs in town around the holidays, Renegade doesn’t charge an entrance fee, which should leave just enough room in your budget for that geodesic glass terrarium you’ve been eyeing. à Grand Park, 200 N Grand Ave (213-972- 4356, renegadecraft.com). Dec 10, 11 10am–5pm.

40 N.Y.E.L.A.

Ring in 2017 with thousands of fellow Angelenos at the closest NYE event L.A. has to a free communal celebration. Swing by in the afternoon for DJ sets, Insta-friendly installations and food trucks, and stick around for a midnight countdown— not climixing with fireworks, as many attendees mistakenly assume—projected onto City Hall. Though the fete’s footprint has expanded each year, we suggest showing up early in case the event reaches capacity. à Grand Park, 200 N Grand Ave (213-972- 4356, grandparkla.org). Dec 31 8pm–1am.
