INNOVATION | CHEMICAL RECYCLING

planning to build a facility designed to recycle the amount of plastic packaging waste generated by approximately 1.3 million German citizens per year. This plastic waste will consist of materials such as multi-layered food packaging items or mixed plastic containers that are typically not recycled today. The start-up of the plant is planned for end of 2025 with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes per year. The feedstock produced will be converted at the LyondellBasell Wesseling site into new CirculenRe- vive polymers for use in applications such as food packaging and healthcare products. LG Chem has started construction of its first advanced recycling plant in South Korea using HydroPRS technology from Mura. Construction of this first site is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, with the site fully operational in 2025, producing up to 20,000 tonnes of recycled hydrocarbons annually. HydroPRS is an advanced recycling process which uses supercritical steam to convert waste plastics back into petrochemical feedstocks for use in the manufacture of new plastic products. LG Chem became an investor in Mura and a HydroPRS licensee in 2022. PureCycle Technologies has produced the first

run of Ultra-Pure Recycled (UPR) resin from post- industrial recycled material at commercial scale. This is the first step in operating PureCycle’s PP purification facility in Ironton, Ohio, USA. Once fully operational, the Ironton facility is projected to have an annual production capacity of 107m lb (48.5m kg) of UPR resin.
