Ikea parent says it will invest €1bn in recycling projects

Ingka Investments, the investment arm of Ingka Group, the largest Ikea retailer, says it plans to invest €1bn in compa- nies that are increasing recycling infrastructure. Since establishing Circular Investments in 2017, Ingka Group estimates that its portfolio companies have recycled around 2.7m tonnes of materials and avoided over 9.4m tonnes of CO2 emissions. Examples of companies in its

portfolio include: mattress recycler RetourMatras, which produces Repoliol for foam products used in 31 Ikea product lines; and Morssinkhof Rymoplast, which has doubled its capacity to 515,000 tonnes/yr and now has 11 facilities across Europe. Another beneficiary is Next Generation Group (NGG), a collective of companies in the recycling technology field.

“Through investments, we are

committed to doing our part to ensure that valuable materials are recycled and reused in the production of new products,” said Peter van der Poel, Managing Director, Ingka Investments. “What would help us go further is if legislation was stronger at prioritising recycling over incineration and landfill- ing, for example by ensuring that EPR schemes were resulting in higher recycling rates. We also welcome eco-design regulations to encourage the demand for these recycled materi- als and we are actively collaborating with relevant authorities and other stakeholders to address these issues.” www.ingka.com www.retourmatras.nlhttps://morssinkhof-rymoplast.com https://next-generation-group.com

Circularix’s second rPET plant

Food-grade recycled PET producer Circularix has announced its second production facility, located in Ocala, Florida, US, is to begin operations by the end of Q1 2025, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion plans. The new location mirrors

Circularix’s existing Pennsyl- vania facility which has been

operational since early 2023. Circularix’s broader strategy involves establishing a network of recycling facilities across the country, with future locations planned for Texas and West Coast states. Jason Farahnik, Co-

Founder and EVP, said: “We also plan to double capacity at our Pennsylvania facility later this year, bringing our

total production to 165 million pounds, tripling our current output.” Circularix said the opening comes at a critical time as beverage brands and consumer packaged goods companies work hard to increase recycled content in their packaging to meet targets. www.circularix.com

The facility is set to open in the second half of 2025. With a capacity of 20,000 tonnes/yr, it will comple- ment the existing 8,000- tonnes/yr capacity at Recon Polymers’ facility in Roosendaal, Holland,

significantly increasing the region’s recycling capacity. Bas Gehlen, Managing

Director at Yellow Dreams, said the project showcases the potential of polyAl recycling. www.tetrapak.com
