show review | 2016 Arburg ups its limits to 650 tonne

Arburg’s big news for the show was the extension of its machine range up to 650 tonnes with the introduction of the Hybrid Allrounder 1120H – a brand new machine design that also provided a showcase for the company’s new Gestica control technology. The machine features a new

outward opening toggle clamping system driven by a dual servomotor and spindle system, with electrically-driven plasticising and ejection, and accumulator-supported hydraulic injection. It offers a 1,050mm mould opening stroke and a 2.4s dry cycle time. Arburg managing director

of sales Gerhard Böhm said the machine is pitched at high performance technical moulding applications – during the exhibition it was moulding and assembling an eight-part folding step stool from a family mould on a cycle of less than 60s using a combination of Multililft Cartesian and six-axis robots.

Böhm said a packaging

specification version is likely in the future. “This is a very fast machine; it is the base for a packaging machine,” he explained.

The Hybrid Allrounder 1120H is Arburg’s biggest machine to date

The new Gestica control

system, only available at present on the new machine, uses a new processor and full-HD touch panel interface with multi-touch technology combined with one-click hard keys. It incorporates a control feature called “Easyslider” that Arburg says makes control and adjustment of movements easier. Program- ming and data formats are fully compatible with the company’s Selogica system. Aside from its size, the

Allrounder 1120H also stood out on the Arburg stand for its striking styling and use of a new mint green colour. Managing partner Juliane Hehl declined to confirm if that would become the new Arburg standard, only saying “it would

be a shame if we did not use the design in other machines in the future.” At a business level, Arburg

continues to perform well. “We targeted a record turnover in 2015 and we have achieved our objective,” said managing partner Michael Hehl. “At €596m our consolidated turnover was round 9% higher than the previous year.” Earlier this year the

company opened a new assembly hall at its plant at Lossburg in Germany to increase capacity for assembly and testing of large turnkey systems – Hehl said demand for such systems had grown by 12% annually over the past three years. Next year it will commence construction of yet another new building – a

multi-storey

administration centre. Hehl said the company had

increased its staffing by 8% during 2016. While confirming that sales activity through the year had maintained a “successful course” he declined to give a precise forecast for the company’s likely result. “The year has not finished yet but we won’t have a lower sales figure,” he said. Other new introductions at

the show included the introduc- tion of the Allrounder Cube machine series, which offers a larger mould space and capacity to handle bulky Cube mould designs, and a new Allrounder 2000T vertical machine with a tiebar-less clamp and 23% larger turntable. ❙ www.arburg.com

Exxon offers improved flow/faster cycles

ExxonMobil unveiled a new low viscosity Vistamaxx grade – Vistamaxx 8880 – intended to be used in conjunction with its Vistamaxx 6202 or 6502 polyolefin compound modifica- tion products to improve flow or increase filler levels. According to the company,

Vistamaxx 6202 and 6502 grades offer the opportunity to improve impact strength and clarity but in applications such as soft touch injection moulded TPEs this comes at the expense of cycle time. Including Vistamaxx 8880 in the formulation can improve

flow and enhance cooling efficiency, allowing moulding cycle times to be reduced, the company claims. It is also possible to increase filler loadings while maintaining flow.

Vistamaxx 8880 is produced at ExxonMobil’s facility in

Singapore using the same catalysis technology as existing grades. It has direct food contact approval in all markets except the EU, where an application is in process (it can be used in indirect food contact applications). ❙ www.exonmobilchemical.com
