SHI Demag previews new IntElect platform


Sumitomo SHI Demag Plastics Machinery previewed its second generation IntElect moulding machine at the show, the first machine in SHI’s product line to use a unified global platform. The new IntElect is based on the Japanese Sumitomo EV machine platform but adapted to the European market. Shown in a 50-tonne version, the machine will be available in 50, 75, 100, 130 and 180 tonne sizes with deliveries starting during next year. The machine uses Sumi-


tomo direct drive technology, with the adoption of a common platform meaning pricing will be closer to that of hydraulic machines of a similar specification. “In the sub-100 tonne [all-electric] range there is a price limit of hydraulic plus 15%; the second genera- tion is a step towards that,” said Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Chief Technology Officer Andreas Schram. The new machine will be


offered in two versions: the standard specification is


pitched at cycle times of more than 10s; the S-package will use modified drives and controls to suit packaging-type applications with cycles down to 3s. Both variants will be equipped with the company’s new NC5plus control. This incorporates Euromap 77 support for simple integration into Industry 4.0 management systems. Schram said the appearance of the control system has been deliberately kept similar to the current version but it is based on all-new hardware and software. The control will be progres- sively rolled out across the company’s full machine range. The new machine was


demonstrated moulding a novel PP dispensing closure with a moulded in semi-float- ing diaphragm developed by Horst Hähl Kunststoffspritz- guss with a part weight of 7.6g and wall thicknesses ranging from 0.8 to 1.2mm. It used the NC5 control’s activeDynamics and activeFlowBalance to ensure precision filling. The company also showed


the latest version of its El-Exis SP hybrid packaging ma- chines, which now feature further energy optimisation and an OPC-UA interface for Industry 4.0 applications. One of the two machines – a 200 tonne model – was running a four cavity IML pot application on a cycle time of 1.75s using mould and automation technology by Brink. Sumitomo SHI Demag outgoing CEO Dr Tetsuya Okamura (he hands over to current Chief Sales Officer Gerd Liebig at the end of the year) said the company will close 2016 with sales of around €236m and expects to grow this to around €260m in 2017. He said the company will be making further investments at its plants in Wiehe and Schwaig in Germany next year to further expand production capacity. The company will also

Trinseo takes Magnum to China


Trinseo will begin produc- tion of its Magnum ABS resins at its plant at Zhangjiagang in China in the middle of next year. According to Tim
