COLOUR AND MASTERBATCH | MATERIALS

Recent developments in colour and masterbatch include conductive formulations, capacity expansions and a glow-in-the-dark grade for use in safety equipment

Colour combinations: latest in masterbatch

Masterbatch formulations help to deliver colours and functional additives into a final product with ease – saving moulders the trouble of developing such grades in house. Chroma Color has launched a glow-in-the-dark colour masterbatch, which it says meets demand from moulders. ChromaGlowUltra – also known as a concentrate – has gained popularity in recent years due to its ability to create eye-catching visual effects. For example, photoluminescent colour concentrates are increasingly used in safety applications such as emergency exit signs, egress path markings and safety equipment. This is because photoluminescent materials are

reliable and can be charged by both natural and artificial light – ensuring they remain visible even in low-light or dark conditions. Benefits of the masterbatch include: rapid

activation, yielding hours of glow; light-stable formulation (fade resistant); and, custom-tailored for glow longevity and brilliance. To ensure the masterbatch will yield hours of

glow, products were moulded and tested by an outside laboratory – resulting in measurements of 32 hours of glow time. In addition, Chroma has made two recent acquisitions in California. It recently acquired Ferco Color, a custom manufacturer of colorants, additives and speciality compounds. The deal broadens Chroma’s portfolio of colorant and additive technologies. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Chroma says that Ferco’s on-site analytical

laboratory differentiates it by providing customers with comprehensive support in colorants, additives, resins and end-product troubleshooting. It cur- rently serves end-markets including medical, aerospace, cosmetic packaging and engineering materials.

It has also taken over Spectra Color, a custom manufacturer of colorants and pre-coloured resin compounds. Spectra provides masterbatch and colour-matching services with custom blending capabilities. It serves end-markets including medical, healthcare and consumer products.
