Right: FX Series beside-the- press granula- tors from Cumberland can now accept different hoppers
Cumberland has produced a White Paper
arguing why beside-the-press granulators often make more sense than centralised ones. It presents five reasons, which come down to material saving (through direct return of scrap to the injection machine for example), labour saving (no need to collect, store, and process batches of material), space savings, reduced maintenance (fewer clean-outs when the granula- tor is dedicated to one production line), and increased safety (owing in part to less manual handling of material). Dreher Granulators says it sees a growing market for its granulators in plastics recycling, particularly for post-consumer plastics such as PET bottles and used agricultural film. The company adds that saving energy and operating costs, as well as designing flexible and wet/dry
granulator systems, are current technical issues driving new developments. “Wet granulation and the processing of large blocks of plastics are also topics of interest at present,” it says. The latest development from the company is the DX 34/65 mid-size granulator. Dreher says it offers reduced energy consumption and costs, less time needed for mainte- nance, and also guaran- tees the operator a much
