articulated cover has proven to be a fit in many other soft-touch aesthetic and functional compo- nents. It offers good mechanical properties, such as high elongation at break and high tear resistance, as well as long-term dimensional stability, thanks to its low compression set. Further key requirements to be met included high flowability for short cycle times in injection moulding and finished-as-mould- ed surface quality. In addition, the USB socket cover must provide and maintain good resistance against the attack of cleaning agents used in professional and medical environments, without causing embrittling or discolouration. The Thermo- last compound is supplied in opaque colour and blended on site with a black masterbatch when injected. If required, the material can also be supplied in specific customised colours. Teknor Apex has developed a new series of TPEs for overmoulding that exhibit good adhesion to engineering plastic substrates while meeting the stringent requirements for use in medical devices. Medalist MD-30000 Series medical TPEs bond effectively to PC, ABS, PC/ABS, CoPe, PET, PBT, ASA, SAN, PMMA, POM, PA and PS. Each com- pound in the series is chemically modified for adhesion to specific substrates. Processable in either multi-shot or insert moulding, the com- pounds are for use in wearable devices, soft-touch or cosmetic grips for device housings, handheld devices, instruments, and seals and gaskets. The new series includes grades with enhanced softness, translucence, low compression set for effective sealing properties, and resistance to lotions and other chemicals encountered by wearable devices. Unlike liquid silicones, the company says that
overmoulded TPEs do not require the use of a primer, have a shorter cycle time due to avoidance of a curing process, and can be processed on conventional injection moulding equipment. Three of the Medalist MD-30000 Series compounds were introduced after successful completion of a joint project with Covestro, in which the materials were overmoulded onto medical grades of polycarbon- ate and PC alloys and tested for adhesion, process- ability and chemical resistance. “Overmoulding Medalist TPEs onto rigid
substrates enhances the ergonomic and aesthetic properties of medical devices, adds new function- alities such as moulded-in seals and cushions, and provides the design freedom and cost savings associated with parts consolidation,” says Ross van Royen, Senior Market Manager for Teknor Apex. “The Medalist MD-30000 Series is the latest
