EXTRUDER DEVELOPMENTS | MACHINERY

Production boost: latest extruder developments

Extrusion machinery developments include refinements to polyolefin film production, recent contracts in layflat film, and installing nine-layer lines at a European flexpack supplier

Film extrusion lines are getting larger and faster as users – typically packaging companies – must satisfy more demanding lead times. The lines themselves must also be able to produce more sophisticated products. Canadian machinery supplier Macro Engineer-

ing & Technology, for instance, is to supply several Quadex nine-layer lines to a European flexible packaging supplier. The lines are designed to handle various

materials – including barrier resins such as polyam- ide, EVOH and PVdC – to produce high-strength, high-barrier biaxial films. The films are then converted into shrink bags for the food packaging industry, especially for meat and cheese. “The extruder screws are designed to process

different materials, so there is no need to change them when processing resins from commodity to specialty engineering resins,” said Martin Baron, director of sales at Macro. The lines use a proprietary nine-layer die and

calibrator technologies and can produce a desir- able range of shrink films for meat and cheese packaging. The film can also be irradiated for

crosslinking, for even higher performance. The system was designed with features to

further minimise waste and maximise energy efficiency. The Macro process control system includes the ReadyRun feature, allowing customers to restore frequently used recipes at the push of a button. This reduces changeover time and im- proves the product consistency. The line also has a ‘green energy’ feature, in which energy consumption is optimised during the heating and cooling process. This allows the customer to view energy consumption in real time, so they know which recipe is the most efficient to produce.

POD improvements During the recent Plast fair in Italy, machinery manufacturer Colines showed a number of products – including the latest version of its POD (polyolefin dedicated) line. At its Marano Ticino facility, it showcased a

Polyblown 2800mm five-layer POD line, a modular blown film line that “meets the highest market requirements in terms of output and quality”.
