RECYCLING AND GRANULATORS | MACHINERY

In total, around 10% of the coated cathode or anode films end up as rejects and must be recycled. In particular, the valuable active materials – such as the NMC or LFP of the cathode films or the graph- ite-silicon mixtures of the anode films – should be processed and directly recycled free of impurities. “Direct recycling means that rejects can be

recycled at the production site and fed directly back into the production cycle,” said Thomas Weischer, operations director in the recycling division at Hosokawa Alpine. “This makes produc- tion more efficient, and the cathode and anode material can be almost completely recycled. Customers also save themselves the effort involved in external recycling.” In the first step of the process, the scrap material

is ground using a Rotoplex cutting mill. This must be operated with inert gas – for safety reasons and to protect the material. The Rotoplex is available in several sizes and can process 250-3800 kg/h. The cross-scissor-cut rotor ensures low energy input into the material and is also very efficient. The feed can be supplied directly from coils via unwinding devices or alternatively as ‘crumpled material’ via a feed chute.

Shredding integration An indication of growing versatility in size reduc- tion machinery is the integration of shredding and granulating. With its Polyplex PPC 50/120, Ho- sokawa Alpine combines a shredder and granula- tor into a single machine. It features a vertically arranged rotor with an upper shredding zone and a granulator zone below. The vertical orientation of the mill allows for good accessibility to the rotor and cutting blade, facilitating quick cleaning, and significantly reducing downtimes. “With our combination grinder, granulator fineness levels are achieved in just one step,” said Josef Zöttl, senior sales manager in the company’s recycling and granulator mills division. “The shared drive for the two functions makes shredding even more energy-efficient.” Polyplex combines simplicity with efficiency. Using a feed unit, the feed material of the shred- der/granulator mill combination is discharged in a self-dosing operation. The supply can be individu- ally adjusted according to the task. After passing through the shredding zone, the

shredded material enters the granulator area where it is further reduced. Hosokawa Alpine says

• Quick setup and automated turrets • Increased throughput • Industry leading tension controls • High-quality finished rolls
