Getting better: medical plastics & applications

Materials for medical applications require – for obvious reasons – high standards of cleanliness, with many rules in place to control quality. TekniPlex Healthcare is expanding cleanroom film and bag production in Belgium with a new multilayer blown film line. The new line is expected to begin operation in

Q2 of 2024, with full-scale commercial production following shortly after. It joins several cleanroom monolayer lines at its facility in Puurs. All are housed inside ISO Class 7 cleanrooms, for use in the production of cleanroom bags. The addition comes as some healthcare market players are shifting from food-grade resin-based bags to those made from pharma-grade resins produced in GMP cleanroom conditions. In addition, the company’s customers have requested higher barrier solutions requiring multilayer film/bag capabilities. “There is a growing demand for films extruded – and bags sealed – in cleanroom environments

across various healthcare categories,” said Bryan Wesselmann, VP of sales and marketing at TekniPlex Healthcare. All TekniPlex cleanroom-manufactured bags are double or triple packed for use in customers’ cleanrooms and can be individually labelled for supply chain traceability. Custom resins or resin blends, including custom additives, are available, as are certified sterilised products with gamma irradiation.

Renewable packaging US-based Pacur, a custom extruder of sheet for medical applications, has begun using Eastar Renew 6763 co-polyester from Eastman to make rigid, thermoformed, sterile barrier packaging. It says this will help to divert plastic waste away

from landfill. “We are committed to developing next- generation sustainability solutions,” said Jason
