certify that a product is biodegradable or com- postable in different environments (industrial and domestic composting or biodegradation on soil) without affecting the environment – proving that their products are environmentally sustainable. In addition, Aimplas continues to coordinate
BioSupPack – a project that is developing bio- based packaging solutions from beer production waste. The research also looks to demonstrate a feasible recycling process for these plastics, based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). Applications will be developed for food, cosmetics, homecare and beverage products. Several working groups will obtain PHAs from
brewer’s spent grain and other monomers from enzymatic recycling of PHA packaging waste. Based on these PHA compounds, several rigid packaging prototypes with tailored barrier proper- ties will be designed at a pilot scale and tailored towards feasible waste collection and separation.
The partners intend to develop an enzymatic
recycling process to recover PHA from the packag- ing. The paperboard fraction can be repulped, showing the feasibility of upcycling post-industrial waste in the production process.
