Recent innovative pipe and profile extruder projects include a new line for making multi-layer PP pipe, another to make nylon- reinforced tubing for an automotive application, and one that uses uses electromagnetic induction to heat the cylinder
Optimised output: developments in extruder technology
Extrusion lines form the heart of any pipe or profile business – so it is no surprise to hear that many manufacturers stick with a favoured supplier over many years. For instance, Italian profile manufacturer MPM
recently bought its seventeenth extruder – in 15 years – from Battenfeld-Cincinnati. MPM makes protective profiles from a range of thermoplastics, for industrial applications and refrigeration. Battenfeld-Cincinnati says that growth in the technical profiles sector is increasing demand for customised extrusion equipment – and that its conical ConEx NG 65 twin screw extruder with BCtouch UX control system is ideal for this type of application. MPM took delivery of such a system back in April. The BCtouch UX control system has intuitive
operation – with visualisation of the line and all of its components – since the display functions are modelled on the modern user interface concepts of smartphones and tablets, says Battenfeld-Cincin-

nati. The system is in line with Industry 4.0 princi- ples, and promotes production optimisation. “Its four most prominent features are the OPC
UA data port, preventive maintenance, easy remote servicing and simulation for training purposes,” said the company. As well as extruder and control system, the latest delivery included the downstream equipment, with the downstream models TechBex and BaseBex, which cover the entire product portfolio from extremely small to large technical profiles. “Especially for the production of non-standard
profiles, we need reliable, high-performance and flexible processing machines, with which we can process polyolefin as well as other types of thermoplastic materials including foamed plastics,” said Luca Mason, CEO of MPM. MPM, which makes all of its tooling in-house, says it will continue to increase production capacity with the new system. The three models of the conical NG extruder series allow various types of PVC, regrind and
