news US machinery shipments up in Q2

The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI), the plastics industry trade association for the US, reported a year-on- year increase in shipments of plastics machinery for Q2 2016 - the third consecutive quarter of growth.

Shipments of primary

plastics equipment - injection moulding, extrusion, and blow moulding equipment - for reporting companies were $312.1m, 2.0% up on Q2 2015 ( but 5.6% less than Q1 2016). For 1H as a whole, shipments were 7.6% up on 2H 2015, according to the SPI’s Commit- tee on Equipment Statistics (CES).

Nifco claims first for JLR

Nifco UK, a producer of plastic car components, has released details of a new thermoplastic composite oil pan, which it developed together with DuPont as part of the Jaguar Land Rover Alive6 Project (which is funded by the UK’s Advanced Propulsion Centre). The new oil pan is

produced using a continu- ous glass fibre reinforced sheet that is produced using a hybrid process that combines first forming the sheet before overmoulding with a conventional short glass-reinforced PA compound. The part is said to weigh 1 kg less than a steel equivalent. ❙ www.nifcoeu.com

including co-rotating and counter-rotating machines, were 35.6% down and blow moulding machines were 17.3% down. Overall, CES said the long-term upward trend in the data corresponds with the prevailing trends in the two major data series compiled by the US government for overall demand for industrial machinery.

will become more difficult in the coming quarters, so the trend of gradual moderation in the growth rate will likely continue. But the incentives to invest in new equipment will persist, so the shipments totals are expected to stay close to the current levels,” said Bill

Wood of Mountaintop Econom- ics & Research, who carried out the report for the CES. There were some sharp

contrasts within the overall statistics: shipments of single-screw extruders increased 12.4% in Q2, while twin-screw extruders,

“Gains in US GDP were disappointing in 1H 2016, but economic growth will be closer to the long-term trend in 2H. This means consumer demand for plastics products will gradually increase for the foreseeable future,” said Wood. ❙ www.plasticsindustry.org

Mixed result for Italian producers

Assocomaplast, the Italian national trade association representing more than 160 manufacturers of plastics and rubber processing machinery, ancillary equipment and moulds, reported imports of plastics machinery up by 9.7% from 1H 2015 to nearly €390m in 1H 2016. A strong Q2 followed falling imports in Q1 but, the organisation said, reflected an overall strong domestic

market. However, exports were down by 0.5-1% in each month and the traditionally strong trade balance was below €1m, according to data from ISTAT. Assocomaplast said the

figures were in accord with recent surveys of processors, who reported a recovery in domestic and slowdown in foreign demand, and of its members, who saw a trend toward stability in orders. This

is expected to continue to the end of 2016. Historically, said associa-

tion President Alessandro Grassi, both German and Italian manufacturers tend to see a slowdown in sales ahead of K. “Interested buyers probably prefer to get an idea of the new technologies exhibited at the fair before planning and committing to their investments,” he said. ❙ www.assocomaplast.org

Huber to expand ATH production

Huber is to expand production of Martinal fine precipitated alumina trihydrate (ATH) at the newly acquired Martinswerk plant run by the Fire Retardant Additives (FRA) unit of Huber Engineered Materials at

Bergheim, Germany. The expansion is due to be

completed by Q3 2017 and follows a 20% expansion in ATH capacity at the facility in Bauxite, Arkansas. Jerry Bertram, VP and general

manager of the FRA business unit described the move as “the first in a series of expansions planned for Bergheim as we begin implementing our longer-term strategy”. ❙ www.hubermaterials.com
