report 3

Transport, cruise, passengers, oil & gas, renewables – nothing will be untouched. And what will happen regarding the important trend of shifting towards sustainability: zero emission shipping, renewable energy and blue growth? With innovations in digital and autonomous shipping? The honest answer is: we don’t know.

At MARIN we had planned our first meeting for the ZERO JIP, to ‘build the engine room of the future together’. Between 80-100 international participants had already registered, showing the commitment of the sector to this important topic! But we had to cancel it because of the corona crisis. We also organised ‘The Future of Ocean Energy and Shipping’, a unique event combining the BlueWeek and FPSO Research Forum, bringing the offshore energy and zero emission shipping communities together. But we had to cancel it because of the corona crisis.

So there are many reasons for ‘feeling blue’. But then it is important to remember the famous quote of William Arthur Ward: “The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails”. So for the ZERO JIP we immediately took action and replaced the meeting by an offline webinar. It was a success and now we have contact with many potential JIP participants through video conferences and other digital channels! We are doing something similar with the BlueWeek and ‘The Future of Ocean Energy and Shipping’ forum, turning it into an online conference on May 26-29 (to join see www.marin.nl/the-future-of-ocean-energy- and-shipping). Almost all stakeholders interviewed in this Report edition will join. It is now the time to think about our joint future!

After ‘feeling blue’ we now have to start ‘acting blue’: take action towards sustainability, despite the current uncertainty. That is why we asked some of the key players (before the corona pandemic) what their thoughts are on the energy transition and how they are playing a role in helping realise a sustainable future.

The maritime world will be changed, MARIN will be changed. But our joint mission remains: Better Ships, Blue Oceans!

Dear Reader,

Like a breaking ‘freak’ wave the corona crisis flooded over us. Over our families, companies and countries. Nobody was expecting it, nobody was ready for it. And we are just in the early phases of realising what the impact will be. How it will affect the world, how it will affect our world: the maritime sector.
