The future of Ocean Energy SBM Offshore S

BM Offshore provides floating production solutions over the full product lifecycle. The company’s

main activities are the design, supply, installation, operation and the life extension of FPSOs. Stein Rasmussen is the Chief Strategy Officer.

What is SBM’s view on the offshore energy landscape and what type of innovations are required to support the energy transition?

Stein: “In the coming years, the offshore energy landscape is going to change, with focus shifting towards a greater role for renewable energy and gas. There is a clear sense of urgency to innovate and produce safe, sustainable and affordable energy from the oceans and at SBM Offshore we are committed to playing a key role in making this happen.

In order to achieve our Vision we have to be prepared to do things differently and this is where collaboration is key. Many challenges faced by our industry have been solved

engineering designs - is the main driver during the development phase. The other main consideration is bringing value to clients, balancing cost considerations with the final product. To ensure these priorities are not compromised, prototype testing can take 6-12 months.

elsewhere, either in a different context or industry. This proves that embracing collaboration and open innovation is going to be critical.”

Can you give us an idea of the milestones and timeline for a typical offshore innovation? Stein: “Safety is of paramount importance and the priority - embedding safety into our

Two good examples are our S3® Wave Energy Convertor (WEC) prototype, which will undergo a one-year test offshore Monaco from 2022, and our floating offshore wind solution, which is based on a Tension Leg Platform concept, allowing it to be moored in deep water. Although the WEC has undergone significant basin tests, the future sea trials will prove its viability and facilitate the next step in industrialisation of the technology.”

What role do you see for FPSOs in light of the energy transition?

Stein: “We are on track for the energy transition, developing solutions for the future as part of our vision to produce safe, sustainable and affordable energy. For example, we have introduced our ‘Ambition 2030’ with clear targets of 25% of revenues to come from gas and renewables by 2030.

However, although the energy transition means that we move away from carbon- based fuels, they will likely be required to play a meaningful part in the energy mix in the coming decades. As leaders in FPSOs, we want to contribute to reducing their environmental impact and, as pioneers, we aim high: our ultimate goal is to provide floating production solutions with zero emissions! To achieve this we have established the eMission Zero programme.”
