news Record number of JIP participants attend Vessel Operator Forum

In May the Vessel Operator Forum was hosted by MARIN. The event comprised a software feedback session for the Tunnel Thruster JIP, the second meeting of the Wageningen F-series propeller JIP and the kick-off meeting for the new WINDLASS JIP.

With more than 31 participants already signed up to the F-series propeller meeting, it was eventually attended by 44 members. The F-series is replacing the well known Wageningen B-propeller series with more than 150 contemporary propeller designs featuring better efficiency, comfort and noise reduction. All propeller characteristics in four quadrants will be measured by quasi steady, open water testing. Many of the VOF participants had a special interest in the new, model propeller milling machine and came along to visit the MARIN facilities.

The newly launched WINDLASS JIP, which addresses the wind loads on high windage vessels in port, welcomed 29 representatives from major ports, operators, pilots, yards and engineering companies. In this JIP, extensive wind measurements by Lidar scanner and predictions by finecasting are combined with the monitoring of vessel track, motions

and line loads in five ports. Based on the data gathered, an operational tool for wind loads will be developed for ports and waterways. See also the special WINDLASS JIP article (page 21).

The next VOF event will be on November 6 and 7 in Rotterdam.
