news MARIN develops MarNIS Risk Index
Maritime Navigational Information Service (MarNIS) is a €12 million project sponsored by the European Community’s DGTREN, which brings together 50 partners to develop maritime navigation and information services on a pan– European basis. The project started in November 2004 and was finalised in February 2009.
project, safety was also high on the agenda. Operational safety issues are dealt with by the MarNIS’ Maritime Operational Services (MOS) centre. This centre houses a collection of services by the competent authorities such as SAR, traffic monitoring, VTS and oil pollution response coordination.
Although Maritime Information Management is the most prominent issue within the
R&D seminar
Following the successful R&D seminar of 2008 and 2007, MARIN will again present its main research achievements of the last year to the Dutch industry. We welcome the feedback from the Dutch industry and our future plans for research will be open for discussion. This year’s R&D seminar will take place on September 22. The official language of the seminar is Dutch. More information will be given through

Launch of Ship Hydrodynamics II course
Following the popularity of MARIN’s hydrodynamics courses, a new course is being launched. The five-day Ship Hydrodynamics II course will be held at our headquarters in Wageningen, from November 2-6, this year.
Nowadays, ship design has become a hi-tech industry in which many complex calculation and testing methods are used to obtain the best result. For the modern naval architect it is important to know how these tech- niques work to be able to ask the correct questions to their suppliers and to advocate the merits to clients. The advantages but also the limitations of CFD methods will be
discussed. Other topics include the choice of propulsor and its integration with the hull, interaction between propulsor and hull, propeller cavitation and erosion risk, propeller-induced hull pressure fluctuations and energy saving measures.
The course is aimed at the more experienced naval architect. Although recommended, it is not necessary to have attended the Ship Hydrodynamics I course.
