When the same voyages are then simulated for a retrofitted version of the vessel, a good assessment can be made of the merits of retrofitting. The retrofit can include updating engines (both main and auxiliary), the application of green technologies such as scrubbers, dual-fuel engines, batteries, etc. and the application of energy saving devices researched in the GRIP project (Green Retro- fitting through Improved Propulsion). The retrofitted engine models can then be used for both the harbour and transit simulations.


Assessing investment costs A final assessment is not only made with respect to fuel consumption and exhaust gas reductions, but also economically because it addresses investment costs. The first assessment in this retrofit case shows a significant poten- tial for fuel saving. Voyage simulations for transit conditions and harbour environments can be made for the existing ship and a retrofitted version. In this way, a well-balanced decision can be made about the retrofit and it is possible to forecast when a return of investment can be expected.
