In Memoriam Johan Wichers


It was with great sadness that we received the news that Dr. ir. Johan Wichers passed away on May 23. More than anyone else Johan knew how to transfer his enthusiasm for off- shore engineering to his colleagues and clients. His curiosity, insight, energy and commitment meant that his depth of knowledge was unrivalled. His vast knowledge and experience is admired by many.


Johan started as project manager in the Offshore Department of MARIN in 1973 and from 1989 to 1998 he was Manager Projects in the same department. Johan was a key player in the initiative and design of MARIN’s new basins and in 1998 he became Vice- President MARIN USA and he managed the MARIN affiliation in Houston. In 2006 he retired from MARIN but he remained very active through his consultancy office WMooring, Inc.


Johan’s contribution to the field of mooring of floating structures in wave, wind and current made a profound impact to the way mooring systems are designed. He also made many pioneering studies on the viscous contribu- tions induced by low frequency motions. Throughout his career he published more than 60 papers on the topic of floating moored structures.


We will miss his unique person- ality, both at MARIN and in the international maritime community and his considerable contribution to the industry will always be remembered.
