news Successful home game for FPSO Forum

From May 7-11 MARIN hosted the 28th FPSO JIP Week and Forum in Wageningen, the home base where it all started in 1998. The number of JIP’s and attendees has grown impressively over the years. This time more than 240 participants were chal- lenged by a very busy JIP Week program with four parallel sessions every day. 12 Joint Industry Projects had their progress meetings and 4 new JIPs were kicked-off.

The theme of the 28th Forum was ‘Offloading’ with interesting presentations of Bluewater on offloading from a DP FPSO to a conventional non-DP shuttle tanker and from SBM-Offshore on cryogenic hoses for FLNG offloading. Also an overview was presented of the results of the Offloading Operability JIP which was completed a few years ago. In the afternoon session 5 initiatives for new JIPs were launched.

The FPSO Forum took place on May 9, the exact day MARIN celebrated its 80th anni- versary. On this special occasion the Forum

participants visited MARIN’s new Depressu- rised Wave Basin; a unique test facility in the world and the largest laboratory in Holland where we can scale not only the structure in waves but also the air and water pressure. We continued in style with an FPSO Forum Dinner cruise on the river Rhine enjoying beautiful Dutch scenery.

The 29th FPSO JIP Week will be hosted by Petrobras in Buzios, Brazil from October 22-26, 2012.For more information please visit www.fpsoforum.com

New MarQER JIP makes its mark

A marker is a “flag” or point of recognition to draw attention to a specific situation. The new Maritime Quantification of Emis- sion and Risk (MarQER) JIP wants to do exactly this for emission and risk. The main objective is to determine a real-time index for emissions and risks of individual vessels and to embed this information in a fully operational tool. Emission and risk calcula-

tions will be based on AIS signals, together with other characteristics of the area, dynamic aspects such as the weather conditions, but also vessels in close proximity of each other. The index can be used for many different purposes such as: - Real-time monitoring, so it will be of assistance to VTS operators

- “History” reporting, making it an important

tool for authori- ties and policy- makers.

The MarQER JIP is presently

being promoted and aims to start up end-2012 with a two- year programme running in 2013 and 2014. Please contact Noel Bovens,

n.bovens@marin.nl for more information.
