6 Offshore Basin tests help Damen with next step in offshore wind Heralded as ‘a total access and accommodation solution’ for wind farms being established further offshore, the new Damen SOV and its DP system underwent rigorous tests at MARIN

9 Bright future for offshore wind Ernst van Zuilen, director of TKI Wind op Zee (Top consortium for Knowledge and

Innovation Offshore Wind), gives his view on the future of offshore wind.

10 MARIN’s latest involvement in floating wind energy A multi-turbine, floating offshore wind concept will be tested for the first time this year.

12 MARIN assists The Ocean Cleanup by testing its pioneering barrier Tests are carried out on the Ocean Cleanup foundation’s pioneering barrier, which will be deployed at the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’.

14 Blue Week 2016: winds of change and an ocean of opportunities Following the success of Blue Week 2015, MARIN’s headquarters in Wageningen welcomed the conference back this year. Here are the highlights.

16 LeanShips demonstrates fuel-saving potential Energy-saving solutions are the focus of the LeanShips’ initiatives. MARIN carries out

numerical simulations during the design phase, as well as during the model and full-scale tests.

18 Exploring the benefits of sustainable seaweed production A multidisciplinary approach leads to a deeper understanding of the potential

of Dutch seaweed. Report interviews Floris Groenendijk, the founder of the TO2 programme ‘Noord-Zee-Wier-Keten’ (North-Sea-Weed-Chain).

19 Developments in ship performance monitoring and analysis for CO2 emission reduction MARIN works with the Royal Dutch Shipowners’ Association to evaluate the implications of the MRV’s performance indicators for general cargo and reefer ships.

20 New North Sea route structure improves safety for future wind farms MARIN has performed several safety studies for Belgian and Dutch wind farms over the years. The latest project centres on the Borssele Wind Farm Zone.

22 Keeping it quiet As underwater noise levels increase, MARIN investigates just how much cavitating

propellers are to blame. Dear Reader,

Why do management gurus always refer to the ‘dot on the horizon’ when they speak about their great visions? Basically this implies that they have quite a short-sighted vision as you can still see what’s on the horizon.

Most probably this is due to the fact that most of them are landlubbers. As maritime people, we know it is important to explore what is beyond the horizon.

Not that we often do it! Currently I am involved in a study that goes beyond the next few years, as it considers the future of the maritime sector in 2050. With a group of people we talk about future scenarios, trends in shipping, developments in shipbuilding and the required research. You quickly realise we are afraid to talk about something that is further away than one or two years because we run the risk of being wrong. And this certainly feels uncomfortable for engineers and researchers.

I appreciate that we want to be realistic, with two feet firmly on the ground. That we do not want to be ‘all talk’. But it can also be a sign of fear and lack of vision. We can be so afraid of being wrong that we do not take daring, but necessary, steps. This means we miss opportunities for innovation.

This MARIN Report is about the future of renewable energy and sustainable ships - areas where we need vision and concrete action. We should no longer discuss fixed wind turbines on the horizon, just 10 miles from the coast, but should focus on floating versions, with horizontal or vertical turbines far offshore. The industry should not just reduce fuel consumption by slow steaming, but should press on full speed ahead with real innovations.

Even in times of low oil and cargo prices our future lies beyond the horizon. Let’s sail and take the blue road to it!
