Jacobs in Kessel, a truly family affair


The farm from the outside.


It’s quite a rarity to come across a mushroom farm in the Netherlands with expansion plans these days. But the farm run by the Jacobs family in Kessel certainly has expan- ded - not only in size, but two family members have come on board too. Two of John and Fenny Jacobs’ sons have acquired a majority share in their parents’ company.


T 20 MUSHROOM BUSINESS


he farm in Kessel has increased its growing area by no less than 63% mainly due to sons Stan and Bart joining the company. Stan (22) com- pleted his bachelor in mechanical engineering, while Bart (21) also successfully graduated in business administration. This nicely divides the tasks at the farm into Stan taking over all the technical aspects - and on a modern mechanical harvesting farm he will certainly be kept busy - while Bart, along with father John, will take care of growing the mushrooms and help Fenny organise harvesting. All four will share


responsibility for the day to day running of the company. Following the expansion, production of mushrooms has increased to 345 tons per week.

Bart Jacobs explains: “We’ve grown the size of our operations here from 21500 square metres to 35020 square metres of growing area. The ‘old’ farm has 20 growing rooms of 1075 square metres each. A further eight rooms have been added of 1690 square metres. The beds in the existing rooms are seven high, in
