ouseholds in every country that is dependent on natural gas supplies from Russia fear the coming winter. Energy (future) prices have soared to unprecedented levels; so much so that governments scramble to dampen costs to a certain extent to keep people afloat financially. On farms, these price hikes have also caused some worries. However, the first headache was the increase in feed costs. With 70 percent of poultry production input costs be- ing feed related, the market disturbances affecting feed ingredients have long been top of mind. Unfortunately, the energy crunch is affecting the poultry industry at least as much as households, albeit with a delay. So much so that the European processors organisation AVEC has major concerns as it sees the poultry supply chain struggling to maintain production levels. Outgoing AVEC President Paul Lopez there- fore asks decision-makers to prioritise food, and poultry meat production in particular, to guaran- tee an affordable and continuous supply going into winter. The point is that the poultry sector is
quite energy dependent. It’s not just about heating up a broiler house for the first few weeks in the birds’ life; it goes far beyond that. Feed (additive) production, egg incubation, transportation and all of the processes related to slaughter, packing and cooling need either electricity or gas.
