Novel coccidiosis control solution for turkeys
The combination of the ionophore monensin with the synthetic nicarbazin in the coccidiostat product Monimax is a game changer for turkey coccidiosis control. The novel solution guarantees robust coccidiosis control as it brings together the strength of nicarbazin with the recognised efficacy of monensin. With the introduction of Monimax, the toolbox of registered products has finally expanded and several European turkey producers have immediately embraced the product.

occidiosis remains a major cause of gastrointestinal disorders in turkeys. The parasite multiplies in the gastrointestinal tract causing tissue damage which may lead to clinical disease characterised by de-
pression, diarrhoea, impaired intestinal health and mortality or subclinical disease, resulting in decreased performance parameters, like growth and feed conversion. Prevalence studies indicate that Eimeria meleagrimitis multiplying in the mid-intestine is the most important and prevalent species in the field. Eimeria meleagrimitis is considered an important predisposing factor for the emerging problem of necrotic enteritis in turkeys. Lesions in the lower intestine are also observed and may be due to the species Eimeria adenoeides/ meleagridis causing caecal cores, or Eimeria gallopavonis which is characterised by caseous lesions in the lower jejunum, ileum and in the neck of the caeca. The historical use of monensin in winter, due to its positive ef- fects on litter quality, is changing with the inclusion of Mon- imax alone or in shuttle programmes with the new product as the starter product (from start to end of brooding period), followed by monensin (Coxidin). The use of Monimax during the first weeks of life, perceived as the period with the most severe gastrointestinal challenges in a turkey’s life, resulted in strong coccidiosis control. The reduced impact of coccidiosis in this critical period was reflected in improved performance, drier litter and less need for therapeutic interventions. Turkey
producers commented that it had been a very long time since they had seen such good litter quality in winter. Another ad- vantage is the zero-day withdrawal time of the combination product which increases flexibility in the event of slaughter at young age. The use of Monimax in turkeys has not remained restricted to the winter period but has been used in autumn and spring too, when temperatures are higher. The use of nicarbazin in turkeys is new and it is therefore important to mention that it does not cause problems when used in periods with higher temperatures. The duration of the coc- cidiostat inclusion in turkey diets in full programmes ranges from 10 to 16 weeks of age, the latter being the maximum age of inclusion that is permitted on the label. Because other pathogenic Eimeria species, like E. gallopavonis, E. adenoeides or meleagridis, could cause problems in older turkeys, the inclusion of coccidiostats in turkey rations is advisable until 12 weeks of age at least.
